    Death's Domain [HM's 4e Campaign] - IC

Welcome one and all to Death's Domain! (Which we will call DD (dee-dee) for short)

This campaign is my first ever shot at running 4e and will give me a chance to use all these very good 4e modules (I've used the maps in a couple PF games What can I say they were really good maps.)

We are going to go from H1 to E3 and find out who will become the ruler of Death's Domain. I hope everyone players and lurkers alike enjoy the ride.

    H1: Keep on the Shadowfell

by Bruce Cordell and Mike Mearls

The town of Winterhaven stands watch over a ruined keep that was once a bastion of good in the realm. This keep overlooks the Shadow Rift, a dark scar in the world that was once a gateway to the Shadowfell but has been dormant for many years. Now, an evil cleric of Orcus, Demon Lord of the Undead, seeks to re-open the gate, and the only thing standing in his way is a small yet determined band of heroes.
And so it begins as almost all these stories do in a little town far from the more civilized lands, surrounded by dark forest and evil monsters. The town for this story is known as Winterhaven.

The small village is nestled in the southern foothills of the Cairngorn Peaks. The walls are weathered stone topped by defensive palisades. Small thatched homes stand around Winterhaven, each fronting a small piece of farmland or pasture.

Inside the walls the town seems cramped as more than a dozen buildings via for room in the small space provided. Lucky for you the building you want is just inside the gates... Wrafton's Inn.

    Jotrek, Doral, and Galim
The three wary traveler's enter the two story public house to the smell of fresh stew and spilled beer. There is little noise as only a half dozen people are taking up varies tables and stools at the moment.

A handsome older human woman wearing an innkeeps apron comes up to you as you stand in the door and adjust your eyes to the dim light (unless you have low light vision of course). "Welcome, welcome to Wrafton's Inn. Please come take a seat you look as if you just walked all the way from Fallcrest without one stop along the way."

She escorts you to a table between the bar and hearth and fusses till all you gear is under the table and you are seated with mugs in your hands. Then satisfied she moves towards the back with promises of a hot meal soon to come.

You finally have time to talk, now that innkeeper is busy elsewhere.

OOC: Reminder that you are here looking for your lost friend and mentor Douven Staul. Mrs. Staul said he hasn't written in almost a month and was last searching for a dragon burial site rumored not to be very far from Winterhaven.

OOC2: I need for one of your characters to have a strong aversion to going out "adventuring" without a healer. And maybe one who would prefer an arcane caster (you can have a kind of debt about that if you wish). Just a way to hopefully get the others in.

    Marius
After you buried the priestess Marla you came to the only settlement nearby - Winterhaven. You learned that the priestess was an old acolyte of the temple here and that she had gone missing a few days ago.

The head priestess of Avandra Sister Linora, played off your warnings of a cult in the area. She said the people of Winterhaven were good people and if there was a cult either she or Lord Padraig would have heard about it.

Not feeling entirely sure of the answers you got you walked to the towns only inn to think and maybe catch a rumor or two for yourself.

OOC: Your character was already in the inn when the others showed up - You may read their sblock to see how they entered the inn. Now you sit at the corner of the bar about five feet from the table near the hearth where you can watch the room and hear the other three characters talk.

"So, we are here. What next? Just running around and asking for the burial site! Pah, maybe we should just ask for the nearest spell slinger, always like carrion if they hear "burial" and "dragon"!" The dwarf says a bit louder than needed.

    "Innkeeper, get me an ale!"

    OOC

Hope it is fine that Galim isn't the one insisting on a healer.

Jotrek eyes his companion closely as he complains about their current situation. "Galim do remember why we're here." He looks around the inn to see if they've attracted any attention. "We should find a cleric of sorts before venturing out as well. We can drag a wizard or sorc along with us if that would make you feel better but Bahamut be DAMNED if I leave without someone that can heal." He quickly looks around again to see if his own outburst attracted any negative attention. "You remember the last time we took a job? What was it you said? 'Eh their just pesky little kobolds. What can they do?' You remember that? I nearly lost an eye...oh and my life. Yea let's not forget that." He finally settles into his seat as the barmaid brings three servings of ale to their table.

    "Thank you." He says politely.

    DOH!
For some reason I thought you mentioned wizard of something...not sure why. I can retcon it or we can roll with it if you like.

"I only said a wizard would maybe know where to find the site... but as you reminded me of those little buggers, someone who can roast small groups of them from afar would be a good addition." The dwarf responds, trying to keep his voice down this time.

"I think you are both correct friends." adds the Doral "We do fine living by blade, but someone to heal the wound and cast a spell would be helpful. Not to mention someone familiar with dragon burial sites." continues the tall human. "But though I am sure Galim would have no problem standing on the table and merely shouting for a healer, perhaps our slick-tongued halfling here could ferret out any likely candidates."

Jotrek takes a fairly quick draw from his flagon. "I suppose I could..." He looks around the tavern. After several minutes of looking he finally gives up with an audible sigh. "Guess I'll have to sweet talk the barmaid." With a raised hand he summons the barmaid.

The perception checks was to look for a holy symbol of sorts. But as it seems I didn't put perception as a trained skill...it sucks.

    Marius, Elven Cleric

Marius sits quietly at a table in the corner, nursing his drink while he muses on his path. He did what he said he would do, yes? He passed along Marla's message. Was it also his responsibility to make sure the people listened? He didn't have the skill to force the people of Winterhaven.

The boisterous arrival of the three newcomers shakes his from his reverie as he watches them go about their business, and apparently continue a long standing argument in tones enough for the whole establishment to hear. He rolls his eyes a little and returns to his drink until what they're saying filters through, and he nearly chokes on the swallow he was taking. Kobolds! Maybe that's why Corellon brought him here.

He rises to his feet and makes his way to their table, taking an empty chair and sitting down.

"Forgive the intrusion, but I could not help but overhear your conversation. You mentioned kobolds? They do seem to be at strength in this area. It can be . . . dangerous as a result."

As he speaks, he idly pulls at the neck of his cloak, revealing a silver star symbol hanging around his neck. He looks around at the trio meaningfully.
