To Catch a Secert

The day's march over, Darling produced a small flask from her pack. She was far fresher from the road than most, having less to carry and even riding piggy-back on Pious for part of the journey before losing track of him in the swarm of soldiers. Still, the trip had taken it's toll, and the spirits spread a welcome warmth in her chest as the sun began to dip lower.

"Rodric!" She called to him across Fallon's fire, "Where is our third? We should start toward the Regular's camp soon. We'll want move through while everyone is busy setting up for the night..."

She floated over to his seat like a flower petal on the breeze and set herself gingerly down next to him.

"If we move with purpose, I doubt anyone will even notice us." She let her head fall onto Rodric's shoulder, holding out the flask to him. "Drink?" She muttered, eyes closing to take full advantage of this short rest.

Rodric

Rodric sat next to the fire, enjoying the female company that was so unusual in any military organisation. As Darling moved next to him, he was perhaps a little surprised at the speed of his body's reaction. Grunting, to cover his embarassment, he reached for the offered flask and took a large swig.

"Dunno where Pious went. It was a disorderly mob of people, not a march... Still, people only see what they want to see. Act like you belong and few will suspect you don't," he added in agreement with Darling's opinions. "It might help to get a covering story straight before we need it. I was thinking that we pretend to be brother and sister, since we are close enough in age. I am escorting you somewhere, though my imagination fails me at the moment."

"Still, it would be better if we are not seen or heard and don't need a half-arsed story," Rodric concluded. With that he stood, regretting Darling's presence on his shoulder already, and began to remove the various segments of his armour.

After baring himself to the waist, he proceeded to wash the sweat and dust of the day's march off, utterly unconcerned with the tattoos, scars and muscles on public display. Pulling a rough woollen tunic out of his pack he pulled it on and grunted again. "Food first though. Always do things on a full stomach."

Rodric

After bathing and eating a modest amount, Rodric drew his sword and saw to it's maintenance; sharpening and oiling to keep in instant readiness. In practice, he was biding time with familiar rituals and waiting for the sun to set further.

Tightening his sword belt, he turned to Darling, "Now is as good as any. Ready enough? And remember our story."

Waiting for an affirmative answer from the slip of a girl, Rodric began to walk towards the regular's camp, keeping to the darker areas between tents and under trees. The burly man, not used to moving without his metal second skin though, was rather more conspicuous than he had hoped - overly forceful leg and arm movements making him look slightly like a puppet played by an amateur puppeteer.

Bummer, knew I should've sorted spells etc up front...

Since I reckon it's odds-on for important enough now, spells prepared for the day are:

Level 0: Guidance, Light, Detect Magic, Mending
Level 1: Bless, Cause Fear, Inflict Light Wounds, Magic Weapon (Domain)
Level 2: Elation (Sp. Comp. - OK?), Bull Strength, Spiritual Weapon (Domain)

Yawning and stretching, Darling stirred from her nap. In no time, she was moving silently with Rodric through the camp. Watching her companion charge through the night, she smiled to herself. Shadows and confidence were clearly thinner armor than he was used to.

Siblings, huh? she thought to herself, I can work with that...

As they walked, she went over the story in her mind.

Rodric

Rodric paused while a half dozen soldiers walked past, talking loudly of the chances of their destination. He took a deep breath, muttering a prayer to Tor in the exhalation. Tor, guide my steps as always. Faith is the only true armour. Not shadows, steel or the skin of beasts.

Feeling more confident, he continued on. What has happened to all the proper battles... Give me my shield, a sword and a friend on either side over shadows and knives any day of the year.

Unjustifiably confident in his and his god's abilities, Rodric continued to stamp through the camp, muttering about his misfortune in life - completely oblivious to the surrounds.

ooc:
Cast Guidance on myself. Need to wring every last bonus out of this roll...
And afterwards, not that it helped. Tor's Balls... You can lead a War Priest to the shadows, but you can't make him stand in them quietly.

Thy wounds are healed!
"Heh? What's this?" a white tabard guard says as he spots Darling and Rodric nearly strolling through the wrong camp. "Bets! Ranor! Looks like we got ourselves a dandy... and her dad."

Two other guards come out from around the tent and look on smiling broadly.

[sblock=OOC]Great rolls for Diplomacy I have used them to make the guards moods friendly.

Sorry to say but the skill challenged has failed but not to worry maybe you can RP these guys out of their gear. And if not their is one other option. ;)[/sblock]

Rodric

Rodric halted at the challenge, somewhat surprised that he had been seen. The man had been living in a fantasy where he was virtually invisible, protected from view by his patron deity... Three versus one isn't good odds here., he thought, instinctively writing Darling off as as useful in a scrap as wet lettuce.

He paused, momentarily at a loss for how to proceed. Falling back on what he knew best, Rodric drew himself up to his full height and raised his eyebrows at the guards. "Father, huh? And I suppose your children were shaving before they could walk? I am not sure if you mean to insult me, compliment my sister or are simply commenting on the unusual arrangements of your own family?" He grinned sardonically at the last comment, hoping to turn the tables on the challenging guard and make him the butt of the others' laughter.

Sugar_Silk, my humblest apologies. Holy Man has been away so long I'd forgotten that he has the Evil Eye over my dice rolls. No more than 1 in 3 or 4 will ever pass 10. :(

With any luck (ha!) we can talk our way out of it...
