The actual United Nations requested that the show stop using its name, so the change to "Unified" was made.

You would think the U.N. would have reacted the way the U.S. Air Force did to the Stargate franchise -- "You want to portray us as the brave defenders of the planet against threats from the stars? How can we help?" -- but that does not seem to be the way it happened.

UNIT is still allowed to operate under 'UN authority', they just can't use the name.

That was confirmed in the recent 'Kate Stewart' episode

Yeah, I thought that was pretty dumb of them. Oh well...

(And, of course, he did actually appear in some of the newer episodes. With Sarah Jane Smith, no less! Miss them both.)

That was the Sarah Jane Adventures, not Doctor Who.
