Yes, agreed.

The critical-hit charts from MERP (and Rolemaster) read like they're for a Heavy Metal RPG. They're full of geeky, sarcastic, dark humor:

Blast annihilates entire skeleton. Reduced to a gelatinous pulp. Try a spatula.​

That's not Tolkien.
