The Duchy of Hesse
Language and Culture
The Duchy of Hesse is the second largest of the five states that make up the Palatinate of SaxGoethe. The people of the Duchy, like those of the Palatinate, tend to be practical and sensible people, favouring order and stability over passion and excitement.
The principle language of the Duchy is Hessian. Hessian is a dialect of Saxon, the principle language of the Palatinate. Speakers of Hessian can understand those who speak Saxon, and can make themselves understood.
Politics and Religion
The current Duke of Hesse is Eckhardt, who came to power upon the death of his father five years ago. He is now 14 years old. Despite his lack of years and frail health, he has successfully implemented several religious reforms. The Duke has two older half-sisters; Magda who is staunchly Orthodox and Erina, who like her half-brother, is considered Populist.
Commerce
The principle trade goods of the Duchy are furs, minerals, mercenaries and timber. However, it is the Hessian mercenaries for which the Duchy is most well known. Hessian mercenaries hire out by the company. The companies are raised by the Grandees who train and equip them. Money is paid to the Grandees, who are then responsible for where their companies go, and who they fight. Technically only companies raised in Hesse are Hessians, but the practice of raising companies of mercenaries is widespread across the Palatinate and generally all companies of mercenaries out of the Palatinate are referred to as Hessians.
Geography
The Duchy of Hesse occupies the south eastern area of the Palatinate, from the central ranges down to the coast. Several large rivers carve their way through the state.
Summers in the Duchy tend to be cool. Winters are cold, with snowfalls frequent. However, the main rivers rarely freeze over completely.
