Sounds like an awesome end to an excellent campaign.

But then, you can't have a memorable campaign without taking risks. Sometimes those risks pay off, and sometimes not. A DM can't always predict what the player characters will do from one moment to the next, and that alone makes every risk worth taking.

I dunno, I've run memorable campaigns that haven't had significant risks: the focus was on characterization more than death-defying adventure.

Granted, that is more unusual for a D&D game, but it's there, to be sure.

Another type of memorable game I run: light-hearted or outright humorous games.


My sudden-death games have not come at climactic battles though. Instead, they have come at early or midway points in adventures, or (back in AD&D) from random encounters.
