http://io9.com/5959528/who-would-win...rtin-weighs-in
Back during WonderCon, MTV consulted Martin about a series of Game of Thrones vs. Lord of the Rings smackdowns:
Aragon vs. Jaime Lannister
Smaug vs. Balerion
Saruman vs. Melisandre
Wargs vs. Direwolves
Ice vs. Glamdring
Frodo vs. Tyrion
Nazgûl vs. White Walkers
Cave Troll vs. Mag the Mighty
Gimli vs. The Mountain
Ned Stark vs. Boromir (Of course)Avatar by Sialla

I vote:
- Lannister (he cheats)
- Smaug (intelligence)
- Saruman
- Wargs
- Glamdring
- Tyrion
- Nazgul
- Mag the Mighty
- Gimli
- Ned Stark (either in a fight or death scene)"The Soul of D&D? It's rolling a natural 20 when you're down to 3 hit points and the cleric's on the floor and you're staring that sunnavabitch bugbear right in his bloodshot eye and holding the line just long enough to let the wizard unleash a fireball at the guards who are on their way, because they're all that stands between you, the Foozle and Glory." - WizarDru

My votes:
- Jaime Lannister in a straight on fight. Better swordsman.
- Smaug
- Saruman
- Direwolves, 'cause they're cuter. Ahem.
- Ice
- Tyrion.. not even close.
- Nazgûl
- Cave Troll vs. Mag the Mighty (Don't remember enough about Mag)
- Gimli, 'cause I love dwarves
- Ned Stark beheads Boromir, who is overconfident.
GRRM picked Tolkien's characters most of the time as well.Avatar by Sialla

Gimli vs The Mountain. I'd like to see that fight. The two most epic close combat killing machines of both sagas against each other. You could even see GRRM pause at that one.
My sarcasm detector is fusion powered. Yeah, that's powerful enough.
You are what you do.

Tyrion's the only GoT character who'd stand a chance as they're both weak combatants.

depends on the amount of time available. GRRM's would win eventually, because they all play dirty, but it would take forever for them to get around to doing anything--they're too busy trying to have non-consensual sex with everything that moves. Any short contest (less than a month) would go to Tolkien's characters.
Also Tolkien's characters would have sincere cheerleaders and followers.
GRRM's followers would be distracted trying to figure out the best angle and ideal time to betray everyone near them.

Aragon (has far more experience)
Smaug (more cunning)
Saruman
Direwolves
Glamdring
Tyrion
Nazgûl
Mag the Mighty
The Mountain (gets the first hit in due to size)
Ned Stark vs. Boromir (heroic fight but both die at the end... i blame Sean Bean)Tell me, in your situation... What would Starscream do?
