Kingdoms of Kalamar Collector's Guide

Welcome to the Kingdoms of Kalamar Collector's Guide!

This is one of a series of Echohawk's D&D Collector's Guides, each of which aims to provide a comprehensive guide to D&D products published for a particular setting or era of the game. This particular guide focuses on the Kingdoms of Kalamar campaign setting. Kingdoms of Kalamar was already a published setting several years before it became an official D&D setting, and it holds a unique place as the only setting to become an official D&D world as the result of a lawsuit.

The story begins with the release of the Dragon Magazine CD-ROM Archive. While a fantastic resource, the electronic archive of the first 250 issues of Dragon Magazine also dropped Wizards of the Coast into some legal hot water. At the time of its release in September 1999, a publisher's rights to electronic reprints of print magazines were the subject of legal dispute. The crisp question: if a company had paid an author a fixed amount for all print rights to a magazine article -- which is how TSR did business -- did those rights automatically include the right to publish an electronic version of the magazine?

WotC took a gamble on the prevailing precedent at that point in time, and released the archive without contacting the original authors of each Dragon Magazine article. (This did draw some criticism at the time.) Fortunately for Kenzer and Company, the agreement in place for the Knights of the Dinner Table comics specifically excluded electronic reprint rights, so there was a clear breach of contract. As part of a settlement agreement, Kenzer gained a seven year licence to use the Dungeons & Dragons brand on Kingdoms of Kalamar products. So, in 2001 the Kingdoms of Kalamar Campaign Setting was published carrying the D&D 3rd Edition logo. Kenzer & Company released more than thirty products with a D&D logo, and have continued to release both print and electronic material for the setting since the D&D licence expired in 2007. Most of the D&D-branded books have been subsequently released as PDFs and/or print-on-demand books without the D&D logo. Since 2007, the Kingdoms of Kalamar has been the default setting for HackMaster.

For this particular guide, I must express my appreciation to George Fields. He maintains an excellent list of Kalamar links on the Kenzer & Company forums which was extremely useful for checking the Guide, and which made me aware of several products I'd otherwise have missed.

This was the eighteenth installment when the Collector's Guides were first published. The original thread for this Collector's Guide is here.

Thank you for posting this list!

I didn't realize there were so many Kalamar books. Some of them are really useful for my new play-by-post KoK game. Thanks to this list I bought a couple more Kalamar books from Kenzer & Co. that I was missing.
