Star Wars beginners box?

darjr

I crit!
I didn't know about this from FFG http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3809 until I stumbled across this unboxing http://newbiedm.com/2012/12/20/unpacking-the-new-star-wars-beginners-role-playing-game-box/

I think I want it just for that map of the falcon!

I haven't had a chance to look at the game, but I think I like the tack of a less complicated wfb3 mechanic (less fiddly bits). Though I'm not a big fan of the multiple games for the same universe ala the W40K rpg. But I think this one is self contained that I might use it for a general space opera RPG.

Alas, my FLGS didn't get in enough copies for me to pick one up; the two that did come in were swiftly purchased. Some of my friends have been playing the beta edition of the full game rules and have been enjoying it; the DM of that group picked up a set simply for the special dice!

I'll probably get it at some point. Not sure if we'll get to play it, though!

How much play can you get out of the beginner's set? Can it only cover a couple of games worth of play or is it something that might be useful for a couple of months of gaming before you have to buy the bigger rulebooks?

The initial adventure is 1-3 sessions (the box says 3-5 hours, all groups vary), but there is a downloadable adventure (linked below) that is a full campaign that I could see lasting as long as a 'usual/reasonable' campaign. There is enough information for the pregens to level them up quite a bit. They don't have discreet levels, you buy skill ranks and 'feats/perks/talents/etc' a la carte. Each charater has talent trees of 9 or 12 such perks. There are also 2 more pregens for download on the website.

The rule book included covers a lot of gameplay stuff, enough you could write your own adventure and make your own monsters. There is nothing on character generation, only advancement. For example: there is a list of perks (talents?) but not their trees. You can also glean some interesting information from the free updates to the beta test packet they post (linked below).

Hiya.

As much as I wanted to get excited...Strange-Dice Required Mechanic = fail. :( Unless, of course, they have rules/options for using "normal" gaming dice in palace of "...replace a purple Difficulty die with a red Challenge die"...but looking at the downloadable Hutt adventure...probably not.

Ah well, I'm sure it will do well (it is Star Wars, after all!), but I'll stick to my good ol' D6 Star Wars version. :)

A friend ran a session of it for a couple of other guys in our group. Work and wife kept me from participating, but I've heard nothing but good from them. It sounds like the dice and game mechanics actually lend themselves to more cinematic action.

Have you actually played with FFG's "strange dice" in a rpg (WH, WH40K)?

Its a bit weird coming from tradtional dice, but once you get used to the system you come to appreciate why. In many ways it makes the RPG less about "the numbers" and more about the story, which is a good thing IMO. If you haven't ever used them, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it.

I was put off by the strange dice too but "less about the numbers" does peak my interest now. Might have to check it out sometime.
