Surprise Round - Mark Two

Armides slips his hand from the manacle and goes to draw the dagger from its concealed location in his rags. Unfortunately he has hidden and secured it too well and it takes him longer to withdraw it from the tangle of rags than expected. He curses his own stupidity. Thankfully, the Red Glaive is on his side this time and can cover for his fumble.

Vordahl looks down upon the guard, briefly eyeing his club. His expression vacant. "Killing starts." He lets go of the manacles, bringing the dagger in hand downward plunging the weapon into the guard's upper back.

Seeing that his spell is no longer needed, Asseni readies his chain to swing it like a club. His other hand firmly grips the holy symbol.

Silhouette lets her hands slip away from the manacles that had been loosely draped around her wrists and steps away from the combat. She watches Vordahl work, preparing to cast a spell should he fail to finish the guard with that one devastating blow.

Armides finally manages to free the dagger from where it was bound up in his rags. He stabs at the guard and the blade slices along the guard's armor but doesn't penetrate or draw blood. Armides curses his ill luck and hopes his companions fare better.

As the guard stumbles away from the attack, coughing blood but still alive, Silhouette intones a pair of siblant, sinister-sounding words and moves as if throwing something. Though her hand is empty during this gesture, something splats against the guard and sticks to his armor, hissing and sizzling and giving off acrid, foul-smelling fumes!

(OOC - My bad, it's Acid Splash not Ray of Frost. Rolled a 12, which is +3 to hit, but -4 for shooting into melee, for a result of 11...which is enough to hit the guard's flatfoot touch AC. It does 3 damage, including the bonus from Point Blank Shot.)

The charmed guard continues to stomp on what used to be the signal horn. It now is more like scrap metal.

The injured guard, seeing the odds not in his favor, starts to retreat from combat. Guard (-10 HP) AC: 15

OOC: Armides and Skalis make attacks of oppurtunity, if you wish.

Armides takes advantage of the guard's misstep to stab at him as he moves away. Unfortunately he just can't seem to get past the guard's armor. He growls his displeasure and hopes Vordahl fares better.

Combat complete.

What do you do?

Bloody dagger still in hand, Vordahl kneels to the guard's body and begins to look for his keys, checking for useful equipment as well. He listens to the echoes of the other guard's stomps on the already destroyed horn. He looks to Silhouette temporarily.

"How long will that control him?"

Silhouette takes a deep breath to steady her nerves. If the guard had had the wits to shout or cry out...well, he hadn't. They had their window. Now all they had to do was not break their necks climbing out of it.

She went to the charmed guard's side and put a hand on his shoulder.

"Well done. The day may yet be won because of your bravery. Walk with me."

Silhouette led him away from the cells, so he wouldn't see his fallen fellow. A charm could be fragile...mental shocks could free someone, or convince them to try to resist.

"You deserve to know the truth. I, and the others with me, are not ordinary prisoners. Corruption has festered in the high ranks of the prison, and we have been tasked to root it out. Unfortunately, it seems whatever evil has seeped into this place has realized our true purpose. We must get out to make our report, but we've been cut off."

She gives him a smile and squeezes his arm. "The guards here are good men. We don't want to fight them. If you tell us where they are, and how many they are...we can make sure no innocent blood is spilled."

Then, as an afterthought, Sil adds, "And...who is in the reinforced cell there?"
