And the other shoe finally drops. (And Belkar's going to get to say 'I told you so!')

On the downside: March 31st! :(

It seems straight forward: Durkon gets vamped, and turns evil. In a way similar to Buffy, his spirit is replaced by that of a demon. So his physical form is that of Durkon, he has access to Durkon's memories, but for all intents and purposes, he is an evil spirit inhabiting the corpse of Durkon. Hel is able to insert one of her minions into that corpse because the Dwarves are her domain, not Nergal's, and she takes the opportunity to turn events to her favor.

I don't know that there is any canonical explanation of what it means to be vamped, and particularly to have your alignment changed, so this works as well as any. And the original spirit of the vampie remains imprisoned within the body.

Being turned (into a vampire) doesn't cause one to be possessed, at least not normally in D&D. As a thrall, one is subject to control by one's master, but, when the master dies, the thrall becomes free willed. There seems to be something extra going on here.

Thx!

If the master dies *the vampire* becomes free. But what is the Vampire? Is it the original person, but now possessed of an undead thirst for blood? Or some other being? You may very well be right that there is something else in play here, but I can totally buy the thesis that the "dark soul" birthed when Durkon was turned was simply the spirit that possesses the body in all cases of vampirism.

Free willed but still evil. Looks like Rich is going with the good part of Durkon being trapped by the evil.

Huh;

Didn't see that coming.

It would be a wondrous schadenfreude for Durkon to wind up with Hel, since Thor has finagled so many souls away from her.:devil:

But ... the comment about being sired by Nergal's serpent, and the comment about the accent; sounds like there is someone else inside the dwarf.

Thx!

Edit: Anyone have a link to the strips with the Lady cleric that was with the dwarf for a while? Wasn't she of Hel?
