I definitely found this news disconcerting. In this case I think the internet only achieved the position it has BECAUSE it was ultimately controlled by a benevolent but disinterested government. Since the US government basically left it alone it succeeded, but because it did control it other governments and corrupt, partisan political forces across the globe were unable to muck it up - as I fear they are now quite likely to do. We shall see.
