Do they explain why a 200lb human walking in front of a jet engine gets sucked in, but grains of dry sand which should be flying in and tearing up the guts of the engine don't budge?

So, they're alive on the island, dead in the church, but wasn't there a statement or two in the church that it was all just a stop on the way to the afterlife to prepare them for it? Kinda, like, ya know, purgatory? Or at the least a cop-out claiming no, they're not dead, but they weren't alive either? I've been thinking of re-watching this from the start anyway cuz I'm kinda masochistic that way, so maybe I'll just start with re-watching the final episode to see if my call of shenanigans still stands.

Gnometown Hero
The church/church universe is purgatory/the afterlife, but everyone arrives there at different times. We know when Jack dies, for instance, but others, in theory, lived long and full lives before ending up there. (The DVD extras show that Hurley, for instance, has a life beyond/after the finale.)

They were all alive on the island, which is definitely not purgatory.
