D&D 5E Paladin/Fighter/Rogue Part Deux!

Okay, here’s the updated (man I hope I got it right this time!) character build for the concept I had of a front-line warrior character stressing battle field control with balanced AC and damage and I'd greatly appreciate any feedback.

The character concept is a leader/talker for the party who saw too many good people suffer needlessly when he was a soldier and has dedicated himself to protect those that can’t protect themselves (servant of Helm), whatever the cost may be. He understands that while important, pure martial and battlefield prowess alone can’t protect people in all situations and that simple skills, tricks, and spells when used judiciously can often produce a tactical advantage. His philosophy is, "The priests may pray for the common folk's safety, but I do what's necessary to ensure it."

As a side note, I also built a Paladin 13, Fighter 7 character that is an alternative with more battlefield options (additional maneuvers) although the spell slot and therefore divine smite potential was the same. Ultimately, I like the seedier nature of taking rogue from a story standpoint. I think it captures the fine line this guy is walking between confronting the darkness and succumbing to it.

Key Features
  • Human for extra feat (Sentinel) and swap first ability increase for feat (Dual Wielder)
  • Fights with 1h/shield until 6th level, then switches to 1h/whip for reach.
  • Can use Sneak Attack and can trip opponents within 10’ with whip.
  • Can make an Opportunity Attack within 10’ or if the opponent uses Disengage or if they attack someone else, within 5’, can attack, turning their movement to zero if hits.
  • Supported by Paladin Spells, a few 1st level utility Wizard Spells, and Combat Maneuvers.
  • Has decent AC and attack with potential for some good damage output.

Questions
  1. Does the order of classes make the most sense?
  2. Should the 4th level of Paladin come after the 3rd level of Rogue?
  3. Did I make any glaring errors like last time?
    • What I'm really looking for is did I get something wrong or will this build be under-powered such that it would not be a viable party member?

How did you get haste? It's not on Paladin spell list? You can't gain spells from Arcane trickster unless you can cast that level? Unless i missed something.

Otherwise looks awesome. I like it.

Re:Haste. It's the 9th level Oath of Vengeance spell along with protection from energy. I think I got this one right?

Except that IN the build he specifies where each proficiency is coming from. And:

- He says he's getting Survival from being a human
- He says he's getting Perception from being a Paladin.

If you look at the actual build, he specifies that he is taking Persuasion and Perception as his class proficiencies. Which he can't do because Perception isn't on the Paladin list for skill proficiencies.

Why fighter 5 when pally 5 already gives extra attack?

Pally 5 / fighter 3 would offer the same result at level 8.

I like the build. It's fun, unique and pretty good power wise. I don't think you'll have any problems holding your own in a normal party. However, here a few tweaks to consider:
* I'd consider starting with fighter for the first five levels. You can take Survival as a Fighter skill and Perception as your free Human skill. You'll get your Dual Wielder feat and 2nd attack faster. You'll also get proficiency in Con saves which is very useful for concentration checks (esp. for Haste).
* If you want to do Paladin first for RP reasons then you might want to do 3 levels of fighter and 5 levels of rogue. You'll get an extra sneak attack die and Uncanny dodge for ~2 hp.
* Fighter (Champion) is a bit more boring, but has more synergy with the paladin and rogue classes. You double your divine smite and sneak attack damage dice on a critical hit. Vow of Enemity and Haste also increases your crit chances. You can also decide to do the smite after a crit roll to get the most mileage out of your scarce spell slots.
* Also, if you really want to max the crits you can take Rogue (Assassin) for the Assassinate feature. However, you give up Shield (which is awesome) and lose that 4th level spell slot. So....I just talked myself out of that being a good idea.

A great 2 round Nova with 19-20 crit chance at 20th level:
1) Vow of Enemity (bonus action) Haste (regular action)
2) Action surge. 2 attacks + 2 attacks + 1 haste attack + 1 off hand attack. Each attack has ~19% of rolling a crit so you should get at least one crit. If you crit, then you can smite + sneak attack for 4d6 (sneak) + 10d8 (4th level slot) + 2d8 (I. Divine Smite)

I think Paladin 11 / Rogue 7 / Fighter 2 makes more sense for optimization. Granted, you lose an ASI/feat, but you pick up 4d6 sneak attack dice + evasion + Action Surge and also get your second attack along with improved divine smite.

It makes little sense to me to go Fighter level 5 as you will already be getting extra attack through paladin. And, if that's the case, Rogue has a lot more goodies early on over fighter. A 2 level dip in fighter is all you should need.
