D&D 5E How much speed could a fast monk gain, if a fast monk could gain speed?

(Hi I'm the player who did the thing with him)

Yeah we thought about that but decided that we wanted to keep it as solo as possible. If you had people helping you you could also have a wizard use gust of wind to push you 15 feet at the start of your turn, and a Fighter 3 use maneuvering strike to let you move up to half your speed as a reaction, if you didn't use the wild magic surge.

I did some brainstorming with one of my players, and we made a couple of improvements to your numbers.

Wood Elf Barbarian 5, monk 6, wizard 6, fighter 2, Sorcerer 1

Wood elf has base speed 35
barbarian 3 gets eagle totem for dash as a bonus action, barbarian 5 gets +10 speed
monk 6 has +15 speed
wizard 6 gets transmuter's stone for +10 speed, can cast 3rd level spells
fighter 2 gets action surge
Sorcerer 1 gets Wild magic

Feats:
Mobile: +10 speed

Have the magic item Boots of Speed to double your movement speed as a bonus action for 10 minutes max

Since you are level 20 you have access to Epic Boons
Epic Boon of Speed: +30 feet

At level 20 you also have access to Artifacts, which give passive bonuses.
Attuned to an Artifact with a major beneficial property rolled 41-50 gives +10 speed

Base 35
+barbarian's +10 from level 5
+monk's +15 from level 6
+wizard's +10 from transmuter's stone's
+mobile feat's +10
+Epic Boon of Speed's +30
+Longstrider's +10
+Attuned to artifact's +10
x2 from haste
x2 from boots

Turn 1: cast Haste on yourself for the extra action and the double speed

Turn 2: cast Longstrider on yourself.
Click the boots of speed together as a bonus action to double speed again

Turn 3:
Eagle totem or Step of the Wind to dash as bonus action
Move as move action
Dash as Action
Action Surge to dash again
Haste action to dash again
when you've moved your max speed minus your strength score you long jump, going that many more feet, ending at your max speed
while in the air cast featherfall as a reaction, roll 1d20 and trigger wild magic, roll 81 on the wild magic table
Use Wild Magic Free Action to Dash again

The end result of this is 3640 feet in one round, or roughly 414 miles per hour.

Even without the Wild Magic, that's 3120 feet per round, or 355 mph.

It was pointed out to me that this record still stands, but could be improved with the use of tabaxi instead of a wood elf. Our base speed drops to 30 feet, but we can double our speed for one round instead.

That puts our new max speed at 7240 feet in one round, or 823 mph.

unless i`m mistaken using the elk totem (SCAG) for +15 feet is better than the dash from eagle since you already have dash from monk (step of the wind for 1 ki) and if UA is usuable, using the last 3 levels for mystic would net you another 10ft focusing on celerity. so a 20% increase to base movement = 8688 ft/rnd or 987.6 mph

Monk 10 / Barbarian 6 / Rogue 2 / Druid 2

Wildshape Horse = Base 60 Feet for 2 Hours.
Unarmored Movement = +20 Speed
Fast Movement = +10 Speed
Mobile Feat = +10 Speed
Longstrider = +10 Speed
Transmuter's Stone = +10 Speed
Total = 120

Dash x 2 = 480 Every Turn, With No Buffs!
Elk Totem Travel Bonus = 960 Travel. 109 MPH Sustained!

But let's add some temporary buffs.
Elk Totem Raging = +15 Speed
Boots of Speed = 2x Speed.
Haste (from a friend or magic item) = 2x Speed.
Total = 540

Dash x 2 = 2,160 Every Turn, For 1 Whole Minute. 245 MPH
Elk Totem Travel Bonus = 4,320 Travel. 490 MPH!

While that doesn't beat 987.6 MPH in one round, I think it wins sustained total distance. And you can have people ride you!

I just realized: There's a small issue with the whole totem barbarian approach! They all require you to be raging to get their benefits, but rage ends if you end your turn and haven't attacked a hostile creature or taken damage since your last turn. And we don't have the bonus actions to spare to start raging on the same turn we start running.

The trick is to make sure we can take some damage before the rage wears off, without using an action. After some research, I think the best solution is to use a vial of alchemist's fire to ensure that we take 1d4 fire damage at the start of each of our turns. You can rage and dump the fire on yourself in round 3, and do the sprint in round 4 instead.

Also, that's a great point about Celerity. We only need 1 level of Mystic to use it, though. The fighter and sorcerer each give an extra move, and the barbarian and wizard each give +10 speed, so it'll have to be a monk level that's sacrificed. And since 2 levels of Monk have the same speed bonus as 5, we actually have three free levels to play with now. Any suggestions?

I revisited this recently, and managed to improve even further on our numbers. I ended up with two (well, three) versions, one with UA material and one without. And one that uses some particularly ill-made and deprecated UA to achieve theoretically unlimited speeds. All are solo; I'll look at the assisted case later, but with the sheer variety of speed-boosting effects out there it's sure to take even longer to put together.

Solo, UA permitted

Build
Tabaxi Monk 2 / Wizard (bladesinger) 2 / Fighter 2 / Artificer (alchemist) 1 / Wild Sorcerer 1 / mystic 9 + 3 free levels
Feats: Mobile, Magic Initiate
Spells known: Dissonant Whispers (from Magic Initiate; it's not on the wizard or sorcerer list), Longstrider, Feather Fall
Psionic Disciplines: Celerity
Alchemical Formulae: Swift-Step Draught
Equipment: Boots of Speed, potion of Haste, scrolls of Shapechange and Glyph of Warding, artifact with +10' speed major beneficial property (41-50 on the table)
Epic Boon: Boon of Speed

Permanent speed bonus: 10' (Monk) + 10' (Mobile feat) + 10' (artifact) + 30' (Boon of Speed) = +60'

Procedure
1 hour in advance: Cast Glyph of Warding from the scroll, storing Dissonant Whispers. (You have to know the spell you're storing.)
Round 1: Cast Shapechange to turn into a Quickling (base speed 120'); Activate Boots of Speed (speed x2).
Round 2: Produce and drink Swift-Step Draught (+20' speed)
Round 3: Cast Longstrider (+10' speed) and enter Celerity focus (+10' speed)
Round 4: Drink potion of Haste (speed x2), activate Bladesong (+10' speed), and jump off of a small cliff. Cast Feather Fall on your way down, triggering a Wild Magic Surge. Roll a 01 on the table, causing you to roll again on the table at the start of each of your turns.

Current speed: (120' base + 60' permanent bonus + 50' temporary bonus) x 8 (Boots, Haste, and Feline Agility (from Tabaxi, will be activated momentarily)) = 1840'

Round 5 (the moment of truth):
  • Roll an 81 on the Wild Magic table, gaining an extra action you can use immediately. Use the action to Dash, activating Feline Agility (speed x2) as you do. Distance travelled: 1840'
  • As a bonus action, spend 7 psi to activate Rapid Step (+70' speed). Current speed: 2400'
  • Use your ordinary movement. Distance travelled: 4240'
  • Use your action to Dash. Distance travelled: 6640'
  • Use the extra action from Haste to Dash. Distance travelled: 9040'
  • Action Surge, and use the extra action to Dash. Distance travelled: 11,440'
  • Step onto the Glyph of Warding, and fail your save against Dissonant Whispers. As a reaction, move your speed. Distance travelled: 13,840'

Final speed: 13,840 feet in one round, or 1572 miles per hour. A little over twice the speed of sound.

To be continued...
