As the title says .. how can you heal an Animal Companion?

Do they have Hit Dice, do they heal when you do or do they heal only with Spells?

Because the animal companion is going to part of the PC's group, I would definitely use the HD/healing rules for it as well.

For monsters it's ok to completely ignore the healing rules, since 99% of the time a defeated monster is killed, and even when it's not then it's probably not coming back before some time.

But when animal companions, familiars, hirelings, allied NPCs, horses etc. are there all the time, IMO it's better to have them recover from damage, and using the same rules as the PCs is a simple starting point.

Agree, I would treat the animal companion like a PC - it needs 3 failed death saves to die, HD healing, etc.

Also, goodberries. Lots of goodberries.

Well, we recommend starting with on-lead training. Walk your companion, and stop if the companion moves forward to remove all slack in the lead. Praise and reward when the companion returns to the heel position. Once your companion can heel on lead, you may begin off-lead training.

Oh, wait ... you meant heal?
