D&D 5E Hoard of the Dragon Queen - Chapter 1

Erevan looks around for clues to the kobold attack, but is soon distracted when he sees two Dwarves emerge from the nearby temple.

A small group of frightened townsfolk - two men, a woman, and a crying child - creep out of the front door of the Dwarven temple, looking around anxiously in all directions for attackers. The dwarves escort them quickly to the cart, and the current occupants move along to make room for them.

As Miri and Renestrae look behind the bar, they can see the half-orc pinned to the ground across the chest by a large beam.

"Agh, what do you want? Come to finish me off, you fiends?" he shouts at you through the smoke. "Oh, wait... you're not with them, are you? Well them, get this blasted thing off of me!"

With a grunt he tries again to move the beam, but it is getting wedged underneath the bar top when he lifts it. If you can move the beam slightly to one side, he may be able to free himself.

The dog growls at Renestrae, but does not move to attack. It's muzzle is covered in what you presume to be kobold blood, and there are some shallow wounds on it's side from the kobold's dagger strikes. It seems understandably reluctant to abandon his master.

[OOC: STR check to try and move the wooden beam, with advantage if you're going to attempt it together]

Miri feels confident she can help the half-orc get free, but of course she will gladly accept any help. "Renestrae, please watch my back while I get him out!"

Renestrae keeps an eye out for any kobold stragglers as the Miri and the stranger attempt to free the half-orc.

Miri, with the help of the stranger, shifts the beam out from under the bar, and Gradiz the bartender heaves it off himself before getting unsteadily to his feet.

"Ah, that's better... thank you my friends." He looks around the tavern, "Kayla? Kayla?!"

There's a bark as his dog bounds up to Gradiz, who kneels down to pet it's head.

"That's my girl! Now then, we'd best get out of here before the whole damn place comes down on us! Let me just grab these..." he knocks aside some ancient, dusty bottles on a shelf behind the bar, revealing two small but ornate vials containing a blue liquid. He quickly grabs them.

The three of you, along with Gradiz and his faithful hound, escape the tavern just in time as the upper floors finally begin to give way and collapse.

Outside you can see that Erevan has been joined by two Dwarves and you have a few more refugees in your cart.

Erevan quickly hustles the commoners towards the dwarven temple, then will attempt to help free the person trapped in the building if he can.

Renestrae, Miri and their new companion help Gradiz the Half-Orc barkeep to the cart, with his dog following behind. Erevan gives the barkeep a hand up into the cart and his hound quickly leaps up alongside him. They both seem ok for the moment, despite some minor injuries.

Gradiz turns to Meadowlark. "Ah, let me assure you... this is not normally the sort of hospitality a guest such as yourself expect at the Teeth and Mead..." he grins, showing his yellowed tusks. "Some of my regulars and I managed to hold the first lot back, but then those damned kobolds set fire to the timbers. No-one stuck around after that, but I wasn't going to just abandon my inn... what's left of my inn..."

The two Dwarves from the temple have likewise helped the townsfolk in their care into the back of the cart, which is now pretty much full. Rolen, the Elven cleric, watches over them, and performs some minor bandaging and aid to those who need it, as best he can now that his healing magic is exhausted.

"Looks like we've got some more passengers - is that the last of them?" says James, the Gnome driving the cart.

The cart will be slowed to no faster than a brisk walking pace with it's load, and there's little room for a party of fully armed and armoured adventurers - you'll have to accompany it on foot.
