4 out of 5 rating for Mage: The Awakening

See previous comments for both Vampire: The Requiem and Werewolf: The Forsaken, as they apply here to a degree also. The game world takes a significant shift from the postmodern, consensual reality theme of Ascension, while studiously removing as many real-world cultural references as possible. The backstory was decidedly more Gnostic in source, but otherwise less interested in exploring real magical paradigms. While taking away the satirical edge the former game had, it does nevertheless make for a good modern magical fantasy game - like Harry Potter in a way. Again, I didn’t find it especially interesting to read and the clarifications made to the freeform magic system generally made the system seem heavier than before too.

I'll agree with what Trippyhippy wrote, and it's a problem that plagues (IMO) the entire NewWorldofDarkness(NWoD) line. The books are just not (IMO) as readable or as entertaining as the OriginalWorldofDarkness (OWoD) line.
