Invisibility Sphere vs. crappy Mass Invisibility

My Illusionist is nearing 13th level and is checking out the good 7th level spells he can take. Unfortunately, as a specialist, he's going to have to take crappy Mass Invisibility!

Can someone tell my why this spell is 7th level? At 3rd level, you can get Invisibility Sphere, which basically does the same thing! PLUS, with Invis Sphere:

"Affected creatures (other than the recipient) who attack negate the invisibility only for themselves."

But then the 7th level Mass Invisibility:

"As invisibility, except the effect is mobile with the group and is broken when anyone in the group attacks."

So why is it that 4 spell levels later the spell actually gets crappier? It sucks that I have to waste a spell slot on this one...

Invisibility Sphere is range personal or touch and a ten foot radius.

Mass Invisibility is long range, not personal, not touch, and any number of targets, no two of which can be more than 180 feet apart. You can hide the better part of an army with this one.

Good point about hiding an army... but how many adventuring parties need to do that?

Plus, if even one person in the army does any attack movement, everyone becomes visible...

It just seems like too little for a 7th level spell...

Why? There are three 7th level illusion spells, seven 6th level, and eight 5th level... and that's assuming you're only allowed spells in the PHB.

Plenty of options to choose that aren't Mass Invisibility...

My DM might allow a non-PHB spell... are there any good 6th or 7th level Illusion spells out there? I couldn't find much...

Oh, and another problem with making an army invisible... they coudn't see each other! How could they move? Plus, a bastard of a DM might say that falling all over someone counts as an attack, so everyone becomes visible...

They place their right hand on the soldier in front and to the right of them and their left hand on the soldier in front and to the left. They do this before mass invisiblitily is cast and then keep in contact the whole time. Once they got into a marching rhythm (which trained soldiers should be able to do) the army could move without much problem.

With Invisibility Sphere, the targets must remain within 10' of the center of the effect. If one person attacks, the rest remain invisible, but the whole bunch is still fireball-bait.

True -- but shouldn't Mass Invisibility allow oen person to attack without the rest becoming visible?

I mean, with Mass Haste, a slow spell cast on one person affected (even the caster) doesn't effect everyone. Why change this with Mass Invisibility? Doesn't sound too powerful for a 7th level spell....

Mass Haste affects one target per level. No balance problems with letting each target have "it's own" spell, unrelated to the others.

Mass Invisibility affects unlimited targets. If "Mass Invisibility allow one person to attack without the rest becoming visible," you have a 7th level spell that basically allows you to cast, say, 425 invisibility spells in one action.

My advice? Stick with the gay paladin and forget spellcasters. ;)
