D&D 5E What's the point of gold?

miatoromatic

First Post
I have only DM'ed one session, but at the end of that session, people asked me what the point of gold is, I point them to the purchasable items, but they said that the items seem pretty cheap and they're likely to fill out their gear sooner or later.

Since I haven't ran a game for long, I want to ask about gold use in the later levels, what do you use it for?

At higher levels, investing into long-term game aspects: international intrigue, wars, social injustice, really expensive brothels.

My players have bought basic gear, healing potions (as well as spicy, healing radishes), poisons, and booze.

They've used it to enrich a clan of goblins they befriended, so that the goblins could improve their lot in life. Also they've hired a few sages and specialists, for information and other odd jobs.

I created a list of special items that run on magic but are based on pseudo-science that they could potentially purchase (running the gamut from 1,000 to 50,000 gp) but the players have yet to visit the place that sells them. There's a board that can surf on the mist that permeates the world, as well as a laser rifle, but surprisingly they don't seem especially interested.

Mostly I'd say its used to advance the plot and for RP. Since they can't buy magic items, players use it for things they want. They might give it to the poor in their hometown, buy a really foppish hat, or save for a castle or retirement. When they do these kinds of things, make it worth their while. Describe to them how their efforts have improved the lives of the formerly impoverished, or have NPCs regularly comment about the hat. Based on my players reactions, the best thing they've spent money on thus far was that clan of goblins.

Kind of funny actually. Gold in 5e is primarily used for the things that are usually glossed over in other games/editions. More book keeping like upkeep, running businesses, paying rent for homes, training etc etc. Most of what others have said. It seems to run counter intuitive to the philosophy of 5e, making things simpler. It can be argued those things are optional via the modular nature of the game.... but then gold actually does become worthless.

Buying magic items.

Sure, the DMG says they aren't available for purchase, but that's just a lie the 1% tell to keep the riff-raff out of the most exclusive shops and esteemed auction houses. They prefer astral diamonds and cases of vintage mithralschlager but most will take gold (preferably in gold golem form for easy transport).
