Barlo offered some insight to help answer while using lyrical verse;
“Mayhap he is just shy,”
“Being ashamed might be why,”
“He doesn’t use greatsword, large axe or heavy mace,”
“Just a thin blade a kin to a wet noodle slap to the face.”

He gave the swashbuckling man an incorrigible grin.

Torelli nodes in turn as several members of the team introduce themselves. "Well, well, I think this constitutes an acceptable team, all things considered. We know there is undead, so having a priest of Ruvalra along will definitely be an asset. And a pair of beast warriors," the man continues, giving the nod to Maui and Taniwah, "seems a suitable start for dealing with physical threats of many kinds. As for you, Mr Hawkins," he continues, turning to face the bard, "we know so little of what we're up against, I would not be concerned over not being perfectly suited for dealing with undead. There is so much we don't know, a man with your diverse abilities seems rather worthwhile."

Taking another deep draught from his mug, Torelli addresses Vincenco. "So, you haven't been too specific, but judging by the way you wear that blade, am I to guess you're the product of one of Venza's fencing institutions? Or, is there more to say? I'm more into the heavy combat style myself, so you'll have to forgive my ignorance if I can't name specific schools off the top of my head--I just know there are many." With that, he pauses and gives ample time for response.

Ignoring Barlo's quip, The Venzin swordsman looks at the sleeping cat on his feet. He shrugs and mumbles something of letting sleeping cats lie. "Sir, I am of Famiglia Del Vecchio da via della Rosa D'Avorio and was sent to the Sword Academy of crossed swords. Maui and I were part of a team to recover property from a necromancer's . . . . .Lair and return it to the Mystic Pearl. So, Regretfully we have fought some undead. This rapier can be used on undead, but I have been trained to use heavier weapons in my lessons. This is the weapon of a skilled gentleman."He gestures to the rapier with an Ivory handle.

His accent is that of local Venzin, though not quite as rough as one from the planks. "The gentleman who poked his head in moments ago accompanied Maui, Taniwah and I on our last wanderings. I can be of great use in a fight, good with not only my weapon of choice and heavier weapons as mentioned, but I can use a bow if needed."

"Ha!" Maui laughs at Barlo's poetry and his fun making. "Barlo plays with te words! He cuts with te words. Sharp Tongue. When we meet te not deads, Sharp Tongue laugh them to dead!" He looks approvingly at the bard. Unknown to Barlo, talented orators have a very high cultural standing and respect within his culture. "Maui give Sharp Tongue te dews if Sharp Tongue not use words against Maui". Turnng back to the person who seemed to be the boss on this adventure he adds for Torelli's benefit, "Vincenzo and Maui fight te leeches and te mother. Maui and Taniwha is not fearing te not deads. We make them deads again."

Nodding as the potential group introduces themselves and banters, the Cortesian maintains a hard, stern appearance, even through the group's antics. Taking advantage in a lull after Maui speaks, he steps in and lays out the situation:

"We are not sure how far back this story really goes," Torelli begins, as if giving a lecture at an academic institution, "but let me lay out what we do know about Tritower. My involvement began yesterday, when His Grace began discussions concerning a rather troubling letter sent to him from two of our junior members, both posted to Tritower. After a short series of meetings, and some magical intercessions on the part of the upper priests, we have decided to act. However, we don't have people for all the things that are to be done, so here I am, discussing matters with you.

"From the letter, it seems that 5 days ago, undead monsters began appearing in the streets of Tritower, killing some of the local populace and dragging others off to some unknown location. I was generally suspected it may have started before then as well, but nobody was really sure. The town teetered towards chaos, finally tipping into a full fledged disaster when, the next day, an unearthly scream was heard across the town. With people already starting to panic, the local town authority and the major religions--Ruvalra, Amenthia and Thalina, came together to get to the bottom of the problem and combat the undead infestation. The servants of Cortesia, inexperienced and few in number, were given the task of aiding the people leaving the town in a panic.

"From the discussions before action was taken, our Junior members, Anna Kallira and Larin Cadalis, noted that nobody had any solid idea of what they were up against at that time. There was a general feeling that the scream, heard by all, was an otherwordly event, although nobody could prove it in any real sense. Any further information that might have been later discovered is unknown to us, as Anna and Larin were excused to begin their part of the coordinated effort. However, for some inexplicable reason, the outflow of refugees suddenly stopped, and the two realized something had gone horribly wrong. They drafted the letter and sent it two us by way of a delivery service using a string of horses and riders located at stations in the towns between here and Tritower. Despite the speed in which the letter moved, the best information we have is now at least four days old."

Torelli stops speaking a moment and takes another break with his beer, setting it down with a loud thud on the heavy oaken table. "This all said, I have been directed to hire seasoned adventurers to assist us while we continue to work on a response. But, we are lacking in useful information, so your job is to investigate, collect any information possible, take any action deemed appropriate, and report back to higher church officials arriving in the camp outside Tritower, or, if no such representatives are to be found, at least disclose your findings to Anna and Larin for a follow-up letter. A logical starting point is getting more information from Anna and Larin than their hurried letter contained. Questions?"

Barlo smiled as the jungle man was happy with his lyrics.

“Why thank you, Maui. I am glad at least someone appreciates the talent of my verse. Tis not so easy to do on the spur of the moment.”

He turned to Torelli and asked with his lyrics,
“I do not mean to be crass, but I must ask about a fee,”
“Adventurers like us have to eat, so we cannot work for free. ”

During Torelli's explanation, Ethane's eyes narrowed as the guard went on to explain what was going on, and his gaze grew ever more serious. He knew from his teachings from Sir Jerric that Ruvalra despised all manner of undead, seeing them as an abomination and twisting of natural life. Whatever was strong enough to cause this massive amount of chaos in Tritower needed to be stopped.

Not all that concerned about being paid when people's lives were on the line, Ethane looked at Anton and asks "Sir Torelli, if I may. Do you happen to have the letter your 2 junior members wrote? If we are to meet up with Miss Anna and Master Cadlis, it might be helpful to have their original letter if possible. Other than that, our job seems pretty simple. Find out what happened, rescue anyone we can, and stop the threat."

Well, Maui. It looks like we get to ha a revenge by proxy on that Lich that ran away by killing more undead. One of my first jobs was to deal with some bodies that turned out to be zombies. I am guessing the gods are getting a great deal of amusement of doing this to me. I am at your service for this."

Maui nods his head at Vincenzo's words but makes no further comment, waiting for the usual discussion to finally end before he can begin the real work. He had found this to be the most painful part of adventuring without doubt. He much preferred sword gashes and bestial bites to the talks with the boss before hand.

Having listened to the group ask questions and banter a little bit, the hiring agent for the Church of Cortesia finally speaks. Obviously addressing Barlo first, with a tilt of the head in the bard's direction, Torelli taps the palm of his left hand with two fingers of his right. "I understand skilled investigations do not come cheap, and so the pay will reflect your relative capabilities. We're not paying you a few gold per day like that novice team that escorted Priestess Anna out there in the first place. Quite the contrary, I rather suspect, depending on the length of the mission, you will make thousands.

"Further, anything of value you, say, happen upon during the mission is uncontested by the Church. This is to say, usual looting rights, so long as none of the Tritower locals have a legitimate claim to it." Taking another generous sip of beer as a natural division between subject, Torelli turns his attention to Ethane next.

"As for the letter from our junior members," Torelli begins, reaching into his inner shirt pocket, "I'm afraid I wasn't given it for your inspection. It had not occurred to me or I would have brought it up before leaving the Cathedral of Glass. However," Torelli produces a folded parchment from his pocket and holds lays it on the table before the group, "I do have this letter of introduction for your group, so you will have their candor from the start instead of having to convince them of your good intentions. Hopefully being able to interview them will give you all the information you might have been able to read between the lines in the letter and then some, particularly in the way of events since the initial exodus from the town.

"And a minor issue,
" the guard continues, adding on an afterthought, "make sure to hand the letter to Acolyte Cadalis and don't be surprised if he takes the initiative to read it. Although Anna sometimes puts up a good game to the contrary, the simple fact is she's blind." Torelli pauses a moment, then asks, "So, anything else?"

[sblock=Payment]Torelli seems rather on the up and up on the issue of pay, although there is some nuance in his statement to cover corner cases. But, for the most part, it's the church mostly paying your TBG, and monsters providing encounter gold, with some give and take here and there to make it math out nice and neat.[/sblock]

Barlo nodded as they received explanations for their questions. With the basics settled nothing else came to his mind to ask the church man. Instead he asked his companions in the quest, “I am assuming that urgency will be the sentiment of the day. Do you all have mounts to help travel faster? I think we shall need to travel faster than a normal person can walk, yes?”

Those he suspected that Maui maybe did not need one and neither did his feline companion so his question was directed more at the warrior and healer.
