Torelli cocks an eyebrow as the antics between Barlo and Maui continue and begins to say something. In that moment, Vincenzo realizes there is a subtle, but discernible alchemical odor wafting up from the small rat-man. However, both Torelli's words and Vincenzo's recognition of this are cut off by a very clear, punctuated magical word spoken by the elder wizard, Hassbek.

Hassbek
Hassbek.jpg
"Chazu!" overtakes whatever the Cortesian guard might have had to say, and reality becomes a blur. Moments later, as the world focuses into a new normality, Hassbek has slipped his hand from Vincenzo's and presently ambles towards a large tree. "Yes, this is place." He stops, resting against the tree, chuckling and looking back at the group as you get your bearings. "Brown Eye? Really?"

You find yourselves on a hill with a large tree dominating the other features. Looking around, you find the setting to be rather pastoral, but in the distance, two major features catch your attention. First, and most visible, Tritower lies less than an hour's foot travel away. You can see signs of things not right with the town, such as smoke rising which cannot be accounted from normal activity. However, there is something odd and unsettling about viewing the town--you just can't put your finger on it.

Secondly, there is a substantial encampment, certainly in the hundreds of inhabitants or more, between the river running through Tritower and the Silver Road. It might take a half hour or so to get there. Even at this distance, it has a very hodgepodge look to it, unlike a military camp where tents are uniform in type and layout. Instead, this looks to be built from whatever people took with them upon exiting the town plus what they have found in the outlying areas.

[sblock=Speech Color and Humor]I altered Hassbek's speech color to mix better with the party, however short-lived his presence might be. Better late than never. Maybe I'll go back and repaint previous posts.

I don't mean to put a damper on Barlo's style, I was just portraying Torelli's nature--very focused at the moment. Let it be known I appreciate everything everyone does to make their characters living, breathing people. :)[/sblock]

Vincenzo sniffs the air and asks, "what's Tha . . . . . " then the rush and roar of magical travel drowns out what he was saying. When they stop moving he looks about taking the view in, worry growing in his eyes. "Well, it looks like our work is cut out for us rather quickly. We might want to ask that encampment, probably evacuates from Tritower, and get as much information as we can."

Barlo blinked with the change of scenery.

“Well done, Hassbek. Glad we are not in that tree or the river,” he smirked. He nodded, “Aye, that horse trader has a crude sense of humor. I thought it would be impolite to the mare to change her name on her.”

Seeing the refugee came, the bard nodded in agreement with Vicenzo and his attitude grew somber. Now was not the time for foolish behavior.

“Aye, Vincenzo.”

“The first place would be the encampment to learn the situation better from those here. We should ask around for Anna and Larin.”

"Indeed, thanks again Hassbek." Ethane said, straightening up and retrieving his spear from his back pack.

Ethane's look formed a serious expression, same as Barlo's, and his hand tightened on his spear before looking around at his companions. "Indeed. I have the letter, let us get going." Once everyone has given an agreement, Ethane starts moving towards the camp.

Vincenzo gives a deep respectful bow.

"Yes, thank you Master Hassbek, for the time saved by your magics just saved countless lives"

"Welcome," the elderly wizard offers. "Hope it help. I stay here, rest up before go back. Tomorrow." Hassbek starts pulling objects out of his bag... a blanket, a folding chair, a big book, a pipe and some smoking accessories, some snacks, and begins to make himself comfortable. Items slide out of the clearly magical bag with ease, until he has built his own little 'Fort Rat'.

"Oh," Hassbek adds, clearly as an afterthought, "If you back before I go, hitch ride at big discount price. If not, that ok too. I get paid, then buy medicine. Life of a rat." He mutters some self-consoling phrase under his breath and shakes his head, waving you farewell, before turning back to his creature comforts and settling in. Propping a pair of spectacles onto his long nose, he seems to be intent on reading in your absence.

The run down the hills will put you in the midst of the encampment in fairly short order. It sprawls across the river valley, and people wander about, some with seeming purpose, others without. You can smell cook's fires as they obviously work to keep people fed. A group of children, the eldest of which are in their early teens, play close to the path of most direct approach. About a half dozen boys, and a couple girls, all quite dirty but seemingly in good spirits. One of the boys and one of the girls are obviously dwarven children, and you're impressed (or reminded, as the case may be) with how cute they are at that age. As you approach, they stop and stare, whispering excitedly amongst themselves but not approaching you nor speaking to you directly.

The camp lies directly ahead.

[sblock=Dwarven children]I have a vision of dwarven children that is kinda like basset hounds. Darn cute puppies, but then they turn into basset hounds. Something similar with dwarves. :)[/sblock]
[sblock=jbear]I would have taken you all directly into the camp, but giving jbear a chance to get back from whatever has slowed down his posting canter so he is not rushed along with no chance to respond to things.[/sblock]

First Post
Maui looked down at the sprawling campsite with a frown, not really paying much attention to the chatter any longer. More talking. He let out a deep sigh and barked "Haere mai!", bending a knee. Taniwha sprang onto his shoulders and took up his usual position of living neck scarf draped over the jungle warrior's shoulders. "Good magic Rat Witch" he said, walking past the rodent wizard, dropping a heavy hand on his shoulder as way of friendly farewell before heading off towards their destination.

As they aproached the camp he couldn't help but smile at the dwarven pups. He had not seen dwarven children before and something about the way they moved was thoroughly entertaining. Not being overly fond of idle conversation, Maui gave no thought to intetracting with the children at the camp edge, so he simply pressed on straight ahead, accepting the stares and whisper as he passed with the others in patient silence.

Barlo was at least comforted to know that children could still play given the circumstances. He waved and smiled at the little tykes.

Commenting to the others he said in a low voice, “At least there is not sense of the end of the world coming. So mayhap things are not as bad as we feared and the evil is not spreading fast.”

Vincenzo sees the children and watches with bemusement as the party ignores a source of great information, "A moment, fellows. The young ones might be if help." Then to the children, "Hi! We are from the city of glass, Venza the beautiful. As such we are not familiar with the people here. " He pulls out all 10 of his copper, "We would like to know who is in charge, and where they are, please"
