D&D 5E [IC] Creamsteak's Princes of Elemental Evil

BURN IT WITH FIRE!!! Archandros screamed at the sight of the halfling. Damien had never quite understood the devil's reaction to the little people. Certainly, they were annoying, but not to the degree that would require instant immolation. The warlock had attempted to do research on the issue, but only managed to locate a fragment of lore discussing an ignominious defeat of Archandros at the hands of a halfling hero before the devil started to threaten Damien's ability to sire progeny.

Again, master, discretion?

Forcing a smile, Damien replied, "Well met, Pike." Fishing a gold piece from his pouch, he passed it to the halfling. "You do know that the very definition of a tip means that it is voluntary, correct? Then again, I imagine waiting for you to figure out how to make change would take longer than merely traveling by way of road. Enjoy!"

The scruffy halfling grimaces. "We all gets what we gets, sirrah. All aboard?"

As Damien gets closer to the boat he sees that some of the ships cargo includes a small stack of books. Books not unlike the one spotted earlier in the general goods store.

When the captain comes to greet you, he smells of scummy stagnant water. The kind infested with insects. "Good to have you aboard. Glad to be of help. We were just on our way back to Womford. Nice to get a little side money off a short detour." He smiles... then laughs... once again... to himself.

"Captain Shoalar's Rivermaid atcher service. Ferry cross the river... four heads... ten silver each... that'll be five gold. Gotta tip."

"We're silver tags, not gold tags!" Thaliss says seemingly outraged. "That gold coin you just got is more than fair, and I'd even say quite generous, to carry us such a short distance across the river. Nice try though, but know that I worked here at the keep last year, and I am aware what is typically charged for a crossing!"

Telepathically, he says to his companions Make no mistake, we are being escorted out of the keep. Holgar brought some muscle to to make sure we leave

OOC: in case this is required:

Tolan hands over a few loose coins, mindful of just how light his purse has grown. These river rats were certainly none to generous with their deckspace. He keeps his thoughts to himself however, and finds some place out of the way to stand.

"Oh my. Well that's right I guess. Rude bugger, you. We'll accept that payment. No harm no foul. Rude gents." The halfling seems disappointed, but you also know from reputation he is a bit of a pickpocket himself. The crew of this ship tends to be known for their gambling problems.

Once aboard, everyone can see that there are four books of similar bearing to the one seen in Red Larch onboard the vessel. The ship is crewed by a meager four persons. The captain, his cabin boy (Pike) and two lanky young toughs.

"You tags ready to go? I imagine you ain't got much other business here in Rivergard."

Looking at the posse that is accompanying Holgar, Thaliss says with decorum "I believe we are, and thank you for your kindness". Looking at the halfling, he adds as gusts of wind make his robes flutter and his eyes slightly glow of blue "and you, don't get any ideas, I don't want any trouble".

OOC: casting of prestigitation

"Aye-aye, Captain," Damien replied, probably mocking, but delivered in a straight enough manner. Damien wandered over to the short stack of books. "Captain Shoalar? What are these books about?" Idly picking up one of the books, the warlock started to flip through it, ignoring any kind of decorum involving permission or other such clap-trap.

"No trouble. Not trouble with the tags. No trouble at all."

The keep's eastern wall is built into the river, forming a long pier that encloses a boat basin. A heavy chain that emerges from the tower to the south stretches across the entrance.

The chain is removed from the path and the keel boat gets underway. "All aboard... first stop today is the east bank. Be careful of the Merrow."

Once underway the captain addresses Damien's concerns. "No fellin up the wares boy. This ain't some dank street prostitute that fancy's yer coin. If you want one-o-dem books, you'll pay for it..."

He relatively skillfully navigates the ship halfway through the river crossing with the current before his two crewmen suddenly drop anchors off either side of the boat. "I'd make some joke about you only paying half-fair so you only get to ride half-way, but that'd be a lie. Filthy tags shouldn't be here."

OOC: My gut instinct is nobody is surprised by this on either side. So going straight to initiative. I'm not sure if that's right here, but since they made the first move, and they made such obvious moves, I don't see them getting the drop on anyone. Anyway, time to see how we fair at doing combat for once.

Initiatives
Damien 24
Aridha 21
Tolan 13
Shoalar 13 (looks like a spellcaster)
Bandits 11
Pike 11 (looks like a thug type or a rogue)
Thaliss 8

OOC: Damien Aridha and Tolan, please post within 24 hours and I'll move combat forward to the enemies round... afterwards I will be looking for posts from all four player before responding. I also forgot to label this map. Assume columns are ABCDEF etc and rows are 123456 etc.

"Well... if I had known it was going to be this kind of party..." Damien started to say.

Stop babbling fool! You know which one to slay first!

"Right." Drawing on the dark spells granted by Archandros, the human warlock coated himself in a dusting of frost so cold as to burn. Dashing forward, the warlock situated himself behind and to the right of the halfling knave, Pike, intentionally baiting the deckhand into attacking him. Taking up position, Damien drew a dagger with his left hand.

OOC: Action: Cast Armor of Agathys: Gain 10 temp HP. Any attack that hits while the Temp HPs are in play causes the attacker to take 10 HP of cold damage.

Move: Moving to F11, intentionally baiting the deckhand into attacking.

Interaction: Drawing dagger with left hand, just because.

Tolan's eyes narrow at the crew's sudden but inevitable betrayal, still growing angry would serve no purpose. His hand, never far from his sword, reaches down to loosen the blade in its scabbard.

"At least I will be able to reclaim my coin."

He lapses into silence as battle commences around him.

OOC: I guess you want actions, since we seem to have beaten them to initiative.
Assuming nothing changes based on Damien or Aridha:

Tolan's eyes glaze over as he locks onto the form of the water genasi standing behind his crew. All else fades into the background as he glides forward, smoothly drawing his blade even as he advances and pivots around the first bandit to swing at the captain.

Bonus action: Rage (1/3 used - round 1/10 raging)
Move to C9 (should be diagonally NW of Shoalar) while drawing blade (held in two hands).
Attack Shoalar

edit: looks like a crit, so additional +1d10 damage
