SYPHEROS 25, 1000 LOWER TAVIK’S LANDING

“What happened?” asks Diana.

“Murder.”

“Murder?!? What happened?”

“You know- Murder- someone died.” Growls the scarred Watch officer.

The apparent Watch Leader steps out of the room. “Move on. It doesn’t concern you unless you knew the person living here.”

“No. Sorry.” And they move down the hallway a bit near a vender with suspicious looking fruit for sale.

“Did you see?” asks the Halfling.

“Shelves were ransacked. Everything is on the floor.” Says Kar-Draith.

“The lock on the door was melted- not picked.” She adds. They look at Hardfist.

Startled as he comes out of a daydream the goliath mumbles…. “doorframe needs dusting.” Then goes silent as he returns to his happy thoughts.

“We need to get in there to snoop… I mean look around.” Says the Halfling. “Any ideas?”

“A distraction. Could you distract the Watch Hardfist?” asks the lizardfolk.

“Uh…. Yes.”

Kar-Draith immediately regrets suggesting it in fear of what the simple minded goliath will do and how much bail money they have remaining.

First the goliath tries making faces at them. They don’t see him or ignore him. Frowning he clears his throat and does it again. Nothing. With a humph and a twitch of his jaw and nose, the big man moves down to a door that looks locked. He stops, sizes it up. Turns to his friends giving a thumbs-up complete with his tongue poking out from the corner of his mouth and steps back.

“Oh….. he isn’t….” begins the Halfling.

“Yup. He is.” Finishes the archer.

=CRASH= as the goliath slams the door. The city watch all come out of the room to see what is happening. The Watch Leader sends the two others after him as she uses a magical locking wand to secure the lockless door to the crime scene. She then hurries off herself as Hardfist makes a face at the two charging guards before seemly jumping off the rail of a bridge.

It takes the artificer a few moments to figure out the locking magic and how to undo it. They open the door and reclose it behind them. Soon after, they hear Hardfist running by laughing and after that a few gasping tired guards trying to keep up with the big man.

Indeed, the large shelf with books and journals has been emptied onto the floor. Diana with Gears checks this out as Kar-Draith checks out the two large tables with alchemy tubes and mixtures. Little is found. It appears Darren was a petty alchemist that made things to sell. The books have recipes for things that were not normal everyday things. He made things for thieves and adventurers to use. Most likely sold on the black market.

The door leading onto the balcony is unlocked. The Halfling goes here to look around. The balcony is roughly five stories over the nearest street / bridge way below. It wouldn’t be an easy climb though Hardfist would do it.

Unhappy with finding little of use, they step outside and relock the door by closing the magical locks she opened. “Find what you were looking for?” asks the merchant with the fermenting fruit.

“No.” says the lizardfolk.

“Did you know Darren?” asks the Halfling.

“Know him? No,” he pauses for drama, “Know who visited him perhaps.” The merchant smiles with an outstretched hand.

The lizardman considers cutting it off.

Twitching, the Halfling gives him a silver.

“He has had several visitors in the past week. They come at odd hours as I am preparing to leave. A human, a dwarf and a beautiful female.”

Enjoying being the center of attention, the merchant continues. “Sometimes an orc or ½ orc would join them. He stunk of rot and sludge. They wore tattered brown robes. Dirty and nasty also. The man had a strange tattoo on his arm. It looked like a dragonmark but colored red.

“Any names?”

“Darren sometimes spoke to them as Tarkanan.”

“Anything else?”

The man holds his hand out again.

Rolling her eyes, the Halfling pulls out another silver. “That’s TWO Silver……..”

“Yes. The woman I know…. Well know of. She goes by the professional name of ‘Precious’. She works at the Blue Fox.

“Blue Fox…. It is…. What and where….” Asks the Halfling with some impatience.

Blue Fox is located below here in the Dragoneyes. It is a brothel.

“Oh.” Is all the Halfling can summon.

Finished with the merchant, the three of them (Diana, Gears and Kar-Draith) inspect the damage made by Hardfist. The merchant there sells boxes and clears his throat.

“Yes?” asks Diana.

“ I may know something as well. I couldn’t help but notice everything.”

“Boxes?,” asks the Halfling looking at the merchant’s goods, “Anything special about them?”

“All well made. Some magical.”

“How?” asks the Halfling looking them over. There are many boxes of different materials and make.

“I have magical boxes that conceal their true identities.” The Halfling looks up at him with distrust. “I have a box that blocks ANY detection spell known…. Or un-known. I also have a box that changes the appearance of anything within it for a few hours. One could make a copper coin look like a gold.”

“Sounds illegal.”

“Shoosh. Don’t speak of such terms of perspective. Would you like?”

“No but you said you may know something about the murder.”

“Not the murder but who visited Darren. The dwarf he mentioned has a name.” The familiar stretching out of a hand occurs. Kar-Draith pays for this one. The silver is placed in a box and with a wave and a quiet command word spoken a gold coin comes out. “Chill. The dwarf goes by the name of Chill. He is a low level mage and works at the Blue Fox.

The two look at each other and nod. Next stop- The Blue Fox.

As they leave the goliath reappears. He has been hiding on a short ledge over looking the bridge they entered on.

“THE BLUE FOX”
01/03/16

SYPHEROS 25, 1000 LOWER TAVIK’S LANDING- THE BLUE FOX IN DRAGONSEYE.

It is late afternoon / early evening when they reach the Dragoneye District. It is another popular entertainment area of all sorts and types where the women of the night are found everywhere.

They enter “The Gardens” which is adjacent to the Blue Fox. The gardens is a courtyard with red roses and short but sweet smelling trees. People come here to court and to meet the Madame and her women of the Blue Fox.

Many scantly clothed women are here along with a few drunken men looking for companionship. Though there is no true dress code in Sharn, these women are wearing little. Some wear only a see-through silken long shirt with a belt (often a belt of Charisma). Madame Valentine spots the three possible costumers and smiles. Two women are already easing up to the Goliath. Both figure it may take two for a man this big. ;)

“Looking for anyone special? I have halflings also if you wish.” Diana has no interest in a female- Halfling or otherwise.

“No thank you. We are looking for someone however in your employment. I believe her professional name is ‘Precious’.

Very quickly, too quickly, the Madame says there is no one of that name here.

“Oh. So much for the REWARD then.” That catches her attention.

“Re…. what has Precious done today?”

“I thought you didn’t know her.” Adds the lizardfolk.

“Well, that is not entirely true. It is her night off.”

“We want to talk to her is all.” Adds the Halfling rolling a gold from hand to hand.

“Molly- please find Precious.” The Madame says to a woman next to her.

The group pass time watching Hardfist being very uncomfortable with two women courting him. Though it is a mere five minutes, it feels like hours to him before Molly returns. Behind her is a beautiful ½ elf woman and a grumpy looking dwarf wearing armor.

“mage?” wonders the Halfling herself.

As soon as the ½ elf sees them, she calls for Chill to run and they turn to flee. Not understanding what is happening, the guard on duty, Milton, a pretty boy ½ orc with long blonde hair, steps between them. Hardfist goes to push him out of the way and finds a challenge as the two of them struggle for control of the grapple. Gears with Diana give chase after the fleeing thieves. Kar-Draith tries to help hold back the ½ orc. The madame, ladies of the night, customers and people just crossing through the Gardens all flee.

The struggle leads to Hardfist tripping and planting the ½ orc in the fountain. He doesn’t let go so the goliath goes with him. The lizardfolk is struck in the process. Angered, he attacks the guard with talons and teeth. Before Hardfist understands how or why, the guard- Milton- is being shredded.

Running down a narrow alleyway, the dwarf stops Gears and Diana. Precious disappears around a corner then returns with a crossbow, she touches the iron tip and lets it lose. It strikes the Halfling and nearly knocks her off the back of her construct canine. Gears and the dwarf go at it. The shocking bite of the construct seems to have no effect on the dwarf. The biting however still does. The metal arrowhead in Diana’s shoulder suddenly begins to burn! Poison she thinks.

Fearing Gears is in trouble, Hardfist drives the guard (with the lizardfolk) hard into the bottom of the fountain and hurries to the construct’s aid. Panicked, the ½ orc attempts to drown his attacker (in a panic, he doesn’t see it is a lizardfolk holding him now). Instead, Kar-Draith rips him apart. Even dead, he continues to claw and chew on him.

While trying to use a healing potion on herself, the goliath leaps over the three combatants and lands and tumbles to an attack position flanking the dwarf. At this point, the door in the alley way opens as a someone is angered by the noise and commotion. He sees the fight and quietly closes the door.

Diana heals but takes more damage. Heat. The arrow tip is superhot and burning her from the inside…. Just like the door lock was melted. Damned magic is on the arrow tip.

The goliath is struck by an arrow but he ignores it as he tent-posts the dwarf into the ground. A second bolt narrowly misses him. He turns and charges. Precious has nowhere to go and is plowed into and rammed into an unyielding stone wall. She goes down coughing up blood.

Chill is knocked out and Precious requires a healing potion to come around. They take them away into a dark stair way to ask questions.

Kar-Draith shows a dark side of himself as he gets them to talk.

Both are merely carriers of stolen goods. They bring things to a merchant at the bottom of Stairway #34 leading into Undersharn.

They also take note- both Chill and Precious have red Dragonmarks. ( Energy Resistance and Heat Metal)

SYPHEROS 25, 1000 STAIRWAY #34- UNDERSHARN

The stairs begin as mildly lit stairs of decent quality but as they go deeper, there are either missing or damaged lights and the stonework becomes shoddy. Finally at the bottom of Stairway #34, they reach an exit onto a wide stone street. The rocks that make up the street are smooth but debris covered from thousands of years of use.

Looking about, there are several doorways and one lone merchant set up. The human middle-aged man watches them carefully.

Kar-Draith goes directly to the vender and demands to know everything about a “Tarkanan”.

“Who? I don’t know of a Tarkanan. Is he a vender or a buyer?” Diana sizes him up quickly. He knows more than he is saying.

“We are searching for a stolen book. We believe Tarkanan has paid for it or at least arranged to steal the book.

“Any help you can give us would be appreciated.” Offers the halfling artificer.

“Who was it stolen from?” asks the man now a bit uncertain and nervous.

“The University. They want it back.”

“Damn you Fellize…. I told him to stay away from Tarkanan.” He mumbles in anger.

“Who is Fellize?” asks the Goliath.

“My son. I warned him not to run around with that gang. Tarkanan is not a person but a group…. A group of thieves.

“We want to help, perhaps we can get your son to leave them. Where may we find him?” asks the halfling with care and compassion.

“Next ward over- the goblin market that is there. He often can be seen there.”

The leave the troubled father alone and go to find Fellize and the thieves guild.

Within five minutes they find the goblin market. Kar-Draith excuses himself as Diana does “Goliath Watch” and stays with Hardfist. He is behaving very well for being who he is. The lizardfolk walks up to the nearest booth where a green with yellow warted old goblin sits. “What are you looking for…. Master?”

“Death Adder.” Is all he says.

“Dangerous. Dangerous snake species. I sell no snake. Are you with the Watch?” The old goblin accuses.

“No. I am searching for the venom.” He continues on. Several other customers move away except for one. The black and purple garbed man doesn’t look or watch but doesn’t move away either. Being near a well, it is uncertain if he is listening in or checking out the purity of the water.

“Godash not sell illegal stuff Watchsnoop. Go away.” Snarls the goblin.

He stares at the goblin trying to determine if he is hiding the illegal stuff or truly legal. He moves to the next booth. Having heard the conversation the goblin merely says “next booth”. Hissing in frustration, the lizardfolk archer does so.

Looking at the young green and white stripped goblin he asks again “Death Adder?”

“Costly it is. Illegal also. Many ears here.” And he glares at the black and purple man’s back. “150”

The lizardfolk is taken back. “That is more than the completed venom.”

“Go elsewhere then. Sell no snakes here.”

He thinks about it then pulls out his hidden money pouch. The goblin smiles and swallows slowly in anticipation of the money. He buys it then asks- “Is Fellize here yet?”

“There” says the goblin closing shop early. He points to the goliath. A lone young man wearing a satchel is walking to the market. He hears his name and suddenly turns and runs for an opening in the walls where a stairway is hidden.

“Stop him Hardfist!” calls out the artificer whom had wandered a bit to check out a booth. Hardfist cannot fit in the narrow stairs well and is easily outpaced. The stairs go down. Kar-Draith is the last to reach the stairs and sees the entire market is closing up and fleeing except for the purple and black man whom merely watches them.

SEGMENT 34
“FELLIZE”
01/23/16

SYPHEROS 25, 1000 UNDERSHARN RUINS

The rogue named Fellize hurries down the stairs and exits into a large moldy room. His pursuers are right behind him. Turning to the right he sprints up another set of stairs then suddenly there are five of him.

Hardfist stumbles into the room. His greater height allows him to see the “five” rogues as they race up the stairs. Gears and Diana rush after the slowest of them and crashes into the stone stairs and one rogue disappears- “Mage!” she calls out.

She climbs back upright on her homunculus and hurries up the stairs. Here there is an open stone platform with spiral stairs going up. She witnesses two rogues reach it. It is about ten feet from a natural stone wall that has glowing lichen on it.

They hurry up the stairs and lose track of the rogue. They travel up several stories before coming to a barred door. Barred from THEIR side. The artificer still tries to break the door down and fails. Kar-Draith suggests he can open it with his greater strength. Hardfist scratches his head and reaches over them and plucks the wooden bar from the door. Annoyed that he outthought her, Diana urges Gears onward…… into a different goblin market area that was not in use at the time.

“He’s not here….” The stunned lizardfolk hisses in frustration.

“We missed him somehow.” Curses the halfling. He never came up the stairs.”

They return down the stairs and look for clues. Kar-Draith is distracted by the open expanse before them. A colossal underground cavern is here. Stone towers and buildings are here from some forgotten time. Natural water springs and broken water pipes however have largely flooded this place. Some of the buildings are above the water’s surface while others are just barely under. Stone bridges connect the building. Many of these bridges are above the water thus connecting each tower through a maze-like pattern.

However, the water depth is uncertain. It is clear enough to see down about ten feet but it is much deeper than that.

“Maybe he went this way?” asks Kar-Draith as he looks out into the water below. None are looking forward to finding out if it is safe. (Kar-Draith rolled a natural 2 for his Search near the Secret Door in the rock wall…. Oops)

To determine how deep it is, they decide to tie a rope to Gears and lower it in. The construct will not drown or suffer from the water. Through his connection with the artificer they can also see under the water for threats and depth. Not certain about this, Diana allows it and soon a worried for his “puppy” Hardfist is lowering an even more uncertain Gears into the water twenty feet down.

Gears turns off his electrical discharge as best as it can as it reaches the water. Lily Pads with glowing flowers are here. The glowing lichen and lily pads give an eerie but beautiful glow to the entire cavern. As Gears goes under the water’s surface, it sees long roots under the lily pads. Thousands of small silver and white fish dart in and out of the roots. Suddenly they swarm the construct. Panic begins to set in until it realizes the fish are cleaning off bits and pieces of dirt and sewer vegetation from his metal chassis. They are “cleaning” him. Closer inspection shows they lack eyes. Diana suspects the small sardines have a water sense or echo location.

Suddenly Gears is struck from behind and pushed deeper. The rope burns and tears through Hardfist’s hands until all fifty foot of line is gone and falls into the water. Kar-Draith is the first to dive in. Gears feels threatened. The attack is non-damaging. Something is pushing it deeper. But there is an explosion of bubbles as the lizardfolk hits the water. He can see two humanoid figures with spears pushing Gears deeper as if to drown him. A second bigger burst of bubbles occurs as Hardfist hits the water.

Thinking it would help, the halfling artificer makes a copper coin glow and drops it into the water so that everyone can see. Instead it attracts thousands more of the small fish and visibility reduces. Hardfist tries to grab the slowly sinking rope several times but cannot judge the reach correctly. Kar-Draith, at home in the water looks to the attackers. Fishmen (Kuo-Toa) are here.

Diana is extremely focused on the events below and thus doesn’t notice the secret door silently open and a sneaking rogue tip-toe out. He violently pushes her over the edge and she finds herself falling twenty feet down into the water. Panicked…. She nearly drowns as before she gets her bearings and swims for a submerged building roof hoping to get out of the water.

The rogue, Fellize, watches on.

SEGMENT 35
“QUAD AND OTHERS”
01/23/16

SYPHEROS 25, 1000 UNDERSHARN RUINS-- THE CAVERN OF FOUR FALLS

Kar-Draith has headed to the same area as Diana. However, even as he reaches the three foot submerged rooftop, an half-orc is spotted striding down a set of stairs leading into the wall with cascading water coming down it. “I am Quad and you are dead….” The half-orc slowly pulls out a highly reflective falchion. A series of marks and swirls on his neck begin to glow red then he is covered with swirling arcs of colored light.

Hardfist finally grasps the rope even as Gears bobs just off the stone floor about fifty feet down. The fish-men turn their attention to the goliath. Even under the water, one back hand by him nearly takes out one. They flank him and begin to attack with their spears even as he tries to save his “puppy” Gears.

Kar-Draith meets the attacking half-orc and soon the half-orc finds himself thrown into the water. Now he is an easy target in the water. Diana however, makes it hard for him as she climbs out of the water by climbing his tail and back to get out of the water. By instinct, Gears attempts to claw / swim its way to its master. However, towing a seven foot brawler in the water makes it nearly impossible. Hardfist seriously injures the two guards before pushing away- leaving several dark trails himself from spear injuries.

Once he is fifteen feet away from a water filled alley where the guards were, they give up the chase and return to their post. Though kinda comical, the four of them reach the rooftop and / or stairway to avoid drowning. Looking around, they decide it is better to leave while alive and try to flee.

As they cross the bridge and an area of dry stone they are met by a halfling. The halfling is about to challenge them when taken down by a charging Gears. Knocked out, they take him for questioning and continue on.

A poor archer that is completely hidden from view fires on them. Completely exposed, they flee. They spot a strange sight on the way- a glass cake display piece filled with fuzzy purple. An obvious trap that Kar-Draith keeps the curious goliath away from.

Soon they find enough cover from the archer they slow down to look at the cavern once more. The roar and crash of the water makes it impossible to hear anything. They sprint once more up slippery stairs covered with waves of water. At the top of the stairs they find out why. Two waterfalls pour out here. They are forced to slow down as the footing is not perfect.

They pass some rocks and are once more fired on by the hidden archer. Once more they run for it and find themselves back from where they entered the area.

They go up the stairs and into the goblin market. It is still vacated so they decide to rest here and interrogate the halfling.

With water from the fountain here they awaken him. For a halfling, he has steel for nerves. No one can intimidate him. Losing his temper, the lizardfolk hoists the tied up halfling and slams him into the wall. Suddenly, a red tattoo on his hand glows and spikes burst out of him. They barely strike the lizardfolk. Over and over they try to scare him but only get him to twist and churn. His spikes cut away the rope and make Kar-Draith’s forearm bleed from several spots.

Finally, after nearly killing the captive with slams to the wall, they get some answers. Dreck, their leader is Dreck. However, with a partially crushed voice box they hear “Dretch”. They fear they may be facing fiends. “Dretch” wanted the book for research.

They learn the leader was in a room where Quad came from….. so close but so far away. Kar-Draith kills Guri (the halfling) from being annoying and for slicing his arm up so much.

“We have no choice, we have to go back.” Says the artificer.

SYPHEROS 25, 1000 UNDERSHARN RUINS- THE CAVERN OF FOUR FALLS

As they return the group takes more caution as they reach the bottom of the staircase. Now they can see small imprints of foot tracks in the wet mold on the floor. They see Fellize’s and their own tracks turning right. They see many more tracks to the left including theirs as they left in a hurry. There is much more traffic this way.

As they step out of the shelter of a stone wall the archer begins to attack once more. They hurry past it and take shelter at the rocks. The archer has to go. Hardfist charges out from the waterfall and down the stairs while Kar-Draith and the artificer with Gears turn back into the area being shot at and leap into the water below. Kar-Draith leaps into deeper water while Diana and Gears land onto what becomes an emerged stairway.

Still not slowing down, the goliath charges forward. There is a twenty foot gap between one block and where the archer seems to be hiding. He leaps and makes it. This action catches the archer unprepared and she flees from her hiding spot. Even then, she is hard to follow as it is a magical effect mixed with skill that she is so well hidden.

The goliath runs her over and takes her down in one blow. Amazed, the others watch him jump back at a closer spot that is only 15ft across. “To climb the mountains where I come from- I had to jump really well.” Adds the brawler with a silly smile of humbleness.

They meet no more resistance as they work alone the water and bridges to the “Dretch’s” hideout. Once there, they ready themselves and climb the stairs where water ripples down the steps with bubbly enthusiasm. At the top of the stairs is a dark room with a few tables with books and notes sprawled on them and a warforged dressed in simple religious monk’s robes and cap.

“Welcome. I am sorry my fellow brothers and sisters did as they did but it was required.” The warforged doesn’t move and speaks in a haunting quiet peaceful tone. “How can I help you?”

Diana notices a terrible glowing green scar on its faceplate. It is largely hidden by the headpiece and cowl it wears.

“We are tasked with finding and returning a stolen book.” Answers the halfling with some caution. She is expecting a fight…. Or at least a trap. “We followed it to here….. to you. Dretch.”

“Please- call me Dreck. You are…..” it asks with still no movement.

“Hardfist, Kar-Draith and I am Diana. This is Gears. The book….?”

“It is here on the table. I recently finished it. If you wish, you may return it for me and gain it’s reward. I don’t mind.”

No one moves. No one trusts this strange warforged.

“Who….. who is Tarkanan?” asks Kar-Draith.

“My brothers and sisters are Tarkanan. I , strangely enough, am Tarkanan. Why did you kill brother Guri?”

This is it- the fight is about to begin figures Diana. “He tried to kill us.” She answers.

“Try…. Perhaps. Do…. I doubt. My brothers and sisters are precious to me. I wish them not to be harmed further.”

“Then don’t attack us.” The lizardfolk makes clear and as something of a threat. Diana collects the book and looks around while doing so. There are books and journals here about the Dragonmarked houses and the Draconic Prophecy.

“If you promise to keep our home a secret then I agree. As I said, I have already read the book. I have no need for it anymore. Take it, leave the other books and leave our home.” A glint of green energy sparks from his right eye.

The four of them back out slowly and then turn to leave.

The book is returned and each of the three are given money by the professor. He will return it the next day for payment. As they leave, he asks they remain in the city as he is onto something from Jaxen’s journal.

Knock knock

Hardfist looks from the chair and table he sits at. Gears settled down at his feet. Diana looks up from her tinkering and nods for the goliath to get the door. Kar-Draith doses again hoping to ignore everyone for once.

The knocks repeat. They are heavy and hard. Hardfist goes to open the door with a smile but Diana beats him to it. Whatever is on the other side, it is a warforged . A large warforged stands there as she opens it.

“Are you Diana?” it asks in monotone voice.

“Yes.”

“Are you Hardfist?”

“Yup.”

“Is there a Kar-Draith?”

“Yup.” Answers the goliath.

“I am known as Charger. I have been sent by Professor Zilshire to collect you.”

“Collect us?” asks Diana with some caution. She was checking out the metal and dark wood construction of the large warforged warrior. She notes the unique build of the warforged. The legs are shorter and the shoulders enlarged. Perfect for charging into things…. Or soldiers.

Despite his shorter legs, Charger walks quickly as he leads the three of them and Gears to the Morgrave University. It raining lightly. A cold rain. Few students are outside as they enter the grounds.

Even the lecture hall is quiet as they enter. The few students here steer clear of the likes of the wide warforged and the massive form of the Goliath. A few nod a greetings to them as they are becoming known and accepted by the students.

Without knocking, Charger opens the door to Zilshire’s office. His secretary, Anita, is here looking over some books. She is separating them into piles that only she understands.

“Oh- Like, Hello.” She says with a beaming smile and adjusts her glasses that were falling down her nose. “You’ve met Charger I see.”

Before anyone can answer, the professor calls to them. Diana, Gears and Kar-Draith enter. Charger is next and there is no room for Hardfist. He stands in the doorway looking up to the shelf he always checks out. Anita quietly stays busy just behind him.

Zilshire has hired Charger to help the group. He will stay with them in the apartment provided. Kar-Draith is not impressed but there are four rooms so what can he say. Zilshire has made some discoveries and contacts recently. His contacts suggest another explorer has clues to the location of the relic he seeks.

They will travel to Aundair in a rail car then take a caravan into Eldeen then travel into the forests. Diana overlooks the location of the explorer is said to be.

The group leave to collect their things and supplies. Diana also suggests she is nearly done with the compound longbow for Kar-Draith. She will finish it tonight so that he can have it for the trip.
