[LPF] Pirate Treasure

OOC: Sorry about the delay, but the end of the week is when I tend to be out of a house a bit more and have less time to start a new combat encounter.


The path is surprisingly clear; aside from a few stalactites that have started to develop and a few places where the walls narrow a bit, it's a comfortable walk as long as you stay single file; the floor has very clearly been smoothed out and the side and upper obstructions very obviously painstaking cleared away. For a random rock this far out in the middle of the ocean, it seems odd for someone to put this much work into it. Whether it be pirate treasure or something else, something definitely awaits you at the bottom. The path slopes mostly down, and after about descending about 60' with no trouble, you hit a sharp switchback; Wahyu is just beyond the turn and Dunkel is in the process of turning when the lights of the lights suddenly fade a bit and the party barely has time to react before two of the stalactites separate from the ceiling and drop down on Dunkel and Qalabash revealing themselves to be squid like creatures. Dunkel is almost hit, but the tentacles aren't quite able to attach to his armor as he tries to squirm out of the way. After missing, they retreat back up the ceiling, which offers them little protection due to limited height of the ceiling here.

[sblock=Knowledge (Arcana) or Knowledge (Dungeoneering) DC 11]This squid-like dark-skinned creature is a darkmantle, a subterranian predator that attacks by dropping onto its prey.

[sblock=DC 16]Though small creatures, darkmantles are strong for their size, and make natural grapplers due to their tentacles and cloak-like skin. Typically attacking by dropping from above, a darkmantle that misses will usually fly back up to the roof of its chamber and try again.

[sblock=DC 21]As well as having a natural camouflage that allows them to hide easily in underground caverns, darkmantles can also cause darkness once per day. Darkmantles see easily through this magical darkness through the use of bat-like sonar, though this can be disrupted by the use of the silence spell.[/sblock][/sblock][/sblock]

OOC: Surprise round was them casting Darkness. They won initiative and attacked and tried to move away after missing, but were not able to get far enough away to provoke an attack of opportunity due to the low ceiling. Now the party is up. The low ceiling will limit the party as much as it limited their attackers. The creatures are within melee range, but slashing and bludgeoning weapons will suffer a -2 penalty to attack because of having to try to avoid hitting the stalactites above.

Qalabash saw his light dim and the squid-like creature drop almost on top of him. He yelled and batted at it with his staff, hoping to hit the rubbery flesh of the creature.

"Watch your heads!"

The Spotted Beast hissed and, with fur standing on end making him look like a puffball, crouched at Qalabash's feet. Luckily, he didn't get stepped on by Qalabash.

Seeing the creature, a darkmantle, drop almost hitting Dunkel but sliding off without gaining a grip, crue switches his wand of shield to his left hand and retrieves his wand of magic missiles firing a missile into the creature as it retreats from Dunkel. "Careful, a darkmantle that misses will usually fly back up to the roof of its chamber and try again."

Wahyu whipped his head around at the sound of the commotion, and seeing perfectly the betendriled beast in the half-light, he cursed and sighed. It was a tight space, and he did not wish to hit his compatriots. Gripping his blade tightly, he pointed it towards his own heart and invoked a name of great valor to guide his hand.

The darkmantles move up into the stalactites a bit more to better position themselves for a new assault, but the ceiling is still low enough they remain within reach of the party's melee weapons.

OOC: The party is up. The penalty to attack them is now -4 for slashing or bludgeoning weapons, but it is clear that they cannot get completely out melee range while in this particular section of the cave.

Qalabash tried to position himself so that he could reach the darkmantle even though it was wedging itself around the stalactites and making itself difficult to hit. He swung at the malformed creature but his staff just thudded against the damp stone. He cursed his failure to strike true.

"Pah! Tricky, monstrous, land-squid! Working itself in among the rocks to avoid getting hit."

He shook his head in annoyance.
