Rebels and the Force Awakens

This post does not include spoilers as it is speculation and does not include any information not available in TV Guide or a general Google search.

Star Wars Rebels is a currently airing animated television series featuring the adventures of a rebel cell fighting the galactic empire a few years before the events of "A New Hope." Among others, it features two Force users who are attempting to be Jedi; Kanan and Ezra Bridger. Ahsoka, a character from the previous series Clone Wars, appears as a occurring character.

It is natural to wonder where at least these three characters went by the time of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, when Luke is told he is the last of the Jedi. However, this does not necessarily require their deaths because Yoda and Kenobi lie, or at least speak "from a point of view." As such, it is possible - but maybe not plausible - for Ahsoka, Kanan and Ezra to be alive by that point, just off somewhere on some other important but unrelated adventure. Maybe they blow up the Emperor's cloning facility just before Vader tosses him down the trash chute.

However....

There are reasons they have to be dead by the time of Force Awakens.

Namely, if they are alive by then then Luke's return becomes less important.

Or how about, more simply, they honestly believe that there are no Jedi left alive? Jedi only feel each other over vast distances if there is some really major power going on. Yoda and Kenobi may well think them dead.

.

It has been 20+ years. Plenty of time for them to die. They are all older than Luke, Leia, and Han, and could simply have passed from old age by the time Force Awakens comes around.

But even if not - the galaxy is a big place, and they could easily have pulled a Yoda, and gone to ground sometime after Order 66, in some distant and irrelevant part of the galaxy.

Clearly one or all three of them are Snoke.

Setting aside the idea Ezra is standing on Kanan shoulders in a Snoke costume...

I suspect if they do not die in Rebels, then they die when Kylo Ren destroys the new academy.

Maybe they retired and went on to lead peaceful lives. Not everyone with Force powers wants or needs to dedicate their entire lives to being galaxy-saving superheroes.

Ahsoka, if she ever learns that Darth Vader = Anakin Skywalker, makes a bee-line to him in an attempt to turn her former Master back to good. (In the old TV series, she was HIS Padawan.) If not, she eventually does something reckless / irresponsible, which draws his attention. That will be the end of her.

The other two might, like Han Solo, be too weak in the Force to be detected at any distance. They could spend their time on the opposite side of the Galaxy fighting Evil over there.

As was made clear in the two "Hand of Justice" novels, any small group (or individuals) who sets a course against the Empire will eventually be ground down and sputter out due to lack of resources. If however they become a big enough gadfly to notice, overwhelming numbers with all the resources they need / want are pointed their way.

Of course, "Revenge of the Sith" makes a mockery of that claim by Yoda and Kenobi anyway - they're shown first going to the Jedi Temple specifically to tell any surviving Jedi to go into hiding, and then they're shown going into exile in extremely remote locations without even dial-up internet.

(There's also the small problem of Luke's training, or lack thereof. If Jedi need to be trained from childhood, and if one of the things that went wrong with Anakin was that he started training too late at age eight, just why did they think it was a good idea not to start training Luke until he was eighteen? But that's another rant...)

maybe one of them had a daughter... just saying ;)

I've seen speculation that Rey might be either Ezra or even Kanans daughter and also a speculation that it was them who stole the Death Star Plans for Bail Organa that lead to the whole adventures of Luke. (they too may have been killed on Alderaan)

It would be cool if Ezra made an appearance in the movies though

oh and I've just had a tweak - what if Phasma is Sabine
