Can You Help With Frog God Games' Charles Wright's Medical Expenses?

Charles Wright of Frog God Games is in hospital. The art director was in surgery to have part of his foot removed after diabetes related complications, a situation which has escalated to complete amputation below the knee. A US military veteran, he lacks funds for personal help and transport to therapy, and his friends at Frog God Games have launched a Go Fund Me campaign to raise funds to help him. They're looking for $10,000, and they're already most of the way there, but every extra penny counts.

There's also an update regarding The Blight Kickstarter campaign. While it says that currently there are no specific delays, they anticipate that there will be some effect on the delivery schedule of the Kickstarter.

[h=4]Update from Krista and Bill Webb[/h]
First, we can't express how grateful we are for the response to this plea for help. Chuck is deeply moved by the generosity of his friends and FGG fans. Thank you.

Second, update on his condition. What started as the removal of a few toes alarmingly developed into a complete amputation of his leg below the knee. This was the worst case scenario and now we must deal with it.

I just spoke to one of his nurses. He will be in the SICU for another day and then be moved to the "floor" where his stump will heal, he will be fitted for a prosthesis, and learn how to use a walker and get around. The nurse said he would be moved soon as he is strong and doing really well (good news). He will remain in the hospital for a week or two at the most (which seems way too short for all that!!). We will have a better idea of how long he will be in hospital care early next week.

If you would like to send him a card or note of encouragement the contact address is:

Charles Wright
c/o James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital
13000 Bruce B. Downs Blvd.
Tampa, FL 33612

The whole FGG team is working to find him the resources he will need to function in both the near future and farther down the road to full recovery. We need our layout guy! And we love him and are sick with worry for him.

Again, thank you for your generosity and help. It will definitely ensure he is housed and fed and getting to his therapy appointments.

Gratefully,
Krista and Bill Webb

I'm sorry to hear this. I have only briefly been introduced to Charles, but he's been a great help in getting new content ported over to our system. We wish him all the best.

Is he a military veteran?

When was he in? If it was Vietnam this is one issue that could be Agent Orange connected and be 100% covered by the VA. If it was OIF/OEF and within 5 years...that also may be 100% covered.

If he is just a Veteran, than the payments can also be paid by the VA. Even if he is at 100% ability and makes far more than normal, he would fall in priority group 8 which means the entire operation may be under $2000 total.

For reference

http://www.va.gov/healthbenefits/resources/priority_groups.asp

http://www.va.gov/healthbenefits/cost/copay_rates.asp

I only mention this because the blurb on the front page mentioned he was a veteran. He should apply or have already applied to be in this program, and if not...why not?

If medical expenses are a thing a veteran is worried about, this is probably the best medical help they could get overall.

The biggest difficulty, is if he has not already applied, it may take 4-6 weeks at times (though with the new 30 day initiative, hopefully it might be quicker) to get into the system, much less make an appointment.

It can also help with prescriptions (insulin for example) where according to the page there is a $9 co-pay for a 30 day supply...unfortunately for groups other than priority 8 the maximum is a $960 cap.

I would try to get him into the VA payment program pronto if he isn't already and is a veteran. They will need a DD-214 and ID.

Greylord - He is a Gulf War 1 veteran which had its own form of neurological disorders. Im not sure if they (the disorder) is officially recognized by the VA.

Depends on the symptoms. If it is, he could be 100% covered.

In addition, if he's a Gulf War 1 veteran, they SHOULD HAVE (meaning, many bases did not do this on outprocessing) introduced him to the VA and got him started on paperwork in regards to any incidents that occurred.

Even if he didn't have any injuries or any other problems and has great financial standing, he should still be enrolled as a priority 8 category veteran, meaning that this operation could have been done for him at less than $2000.

If he's not signed up, they should sign him up pronto if he's a veteran. They will need his DD-214 (it does require an honorable discharge) and an ID.

If he has worked 5 out of the past 10 years and expects his work to be affected for 12 months or more, he should also apply for Social Security disability. There is a 5 month waiting period after disability onset where no payment is made, but it takes about that long to get a medical decision in most states anyway. When he feels well enough, he can go to socialsecurity.gov (don't go to .com, the is an ambulance chasing lawyer) and complete the online application and someone will contact him by phone within a couple of weeks to finish it up.
