This is set in a home brew campaign setting. One of its quirks is that gods exist only if they are worshipped, and new gods are created once they have a large enough following. You can use any deity from real mythology or any D&D/pathfinder/other fantasy RPG that you want. If you like you can make your own, but would have to run it by me first.

You could flavor it so that as you grow in influence the popularity of the god grows which results in you gaining power (levelling up). That could be pretty cool. Just an idea though, you don't have to use it.

I actually like that idea a lot. I was mulling over in my head something like it, but you connected it to game mechanics waay better than I was starting to.

Okay, I'll do some writing. :)

Cool, can't wait to see the character. I also do play a lot of clerics/paladin's so I've spent a lot of time thinking about things like this.
