My Thayan Wizard needs bodyguards!

I am creating an Red Wizard NPC to use against my players. I have made him a Wizard 5/Red Wizard 2 and he specializes in Enchantment.

I would like to make him a pair of CR 5 bodyguards. These must be something that could regularly acoompnany him into civilized areas (e.g. nothing too exotic).

Prestige classes will be tough with only 5 levels to work with but any class combo is okay. If possible one could be a 'stealthy' type and the other a 'bruiser' type.

I don't need stats as much as ideas and character concepts.

Thanks for your help!

Boingy! Boingy!
I'd keep it simple. Two attractive female humans, one a spike chain specialist fighter (reach being good to guard the body of a spellcaster) and the other a highly acrobatic rogue (Dodge, Mobility, high Tumble to get into flanking position).

You don't need a PrC to be a bodyguard. An EXCEPTIONAL bodyguard maybe, but any reasonably tough and well-trained character (ie, a regular 5th level fighter, rogue or multiclassed combo) can do the job in a pinch.

Make it simple.

The buffer of the two is a fighter3/rogue2.

The more sly of the two is a rogue3/fighter2.

Together they can be quite deadly and each has a bit of specialization in their field.

Straight fighter level 5. either human or half-orc. specialization in the weapon.

straight rogue level 5. either human or half-orc. focus on high tumble, and mobility. sleep or paralytic poison use a plus.

I know you only have 5 levels to work with right now.. but in case this does come in to play ...

I am almost positive I saw a Red Wizard Body guard prestige class somewhere... (Possibly in that Lords of Darkness supplement, but I could be wrong on the source as I don't have the book, just thumbed through it before).

I don't know how good / not good it is nor if you could even take it by level 5...

anyway, just mentioning it in case it helps.

What is the Red Wizard going to do? Stay and fight or run away?

I've always liked:
Cleric with Sanctuary and Shield Other spells.

You're thinking of Knight of Thay, FBA827.

It uh... wasn't very good.

So yeah! I'd probably go with the 2 female humans option. I mean, this guy's a thayvian - just have them be from a specially bred slave family that were raised for this sort of thing.

LN(e), Monk1/Rogue1/Fighter3 and working toward the Devoted Defender PrC. Heh, if they survive to later on in the campaign (reoccuring villian), maybe even give 'em some of those team-fighting feats.

Don't forget to give 'em Sense Motive!

Don't red wizards use gnolls as muscle/slaves? add on a couple fighter levels and go with it. As intelligent humanoids they can go in civilized areas, and they will add to the bad dude feel of the wizard. Quintessential wizard has a wizard bodyguard class and several feats that would be useful.
