The creature does seem to thrash in the direction of the extra noise, but it's also smelling the air around it.

"One o' ye come behind me and shut the coffin's lid," Koregar whispered to the others. "I'm gonna try an' put him back to bed."
Koregar drew his battleaxe and shield, squaring it on his shoulder. "Be seein ya soon, Gerta," he said to himself. Then he ran at the thing, positioning it between him and the coffin. "Gerta!" he yelled as he closed within a foot of the creature, attempting to shove it back into its sleeping hole.
