I wasn't trying to imply 5E was any more so than any other edition. I simply stated it to clarify the edition stated by the OP. The real point was that I believe a "sleep dart" could be very possible in any given campaign which the poster that reply was intended seem to imply was not possible unless I misinterpreted his post which is always a possibility.

Yeah, the more I look at it the more likely something like a knock out poison is going to be the way to go.

As for making him combat effective: talk to your DM about making a variant of the Beastmaster Ranger archetype that would allow you to use any one of the animals you've captured, granting that you are nearby your arena in order to switch to a different one.
