“Evil gods?” Dren asked skeptically. “Clouds rainin’ boulders? An’ wot did they take?” He tried to pry some logical coherence out of the grieving, drunken story.

Tranio nods at the veteran, and says a prayer for the Lady Velrosa Nandar. It is serviceable, but sincere. None escapes Death; questions are always left behind; may those remaining be comforted; etc.

In truth, Tranio is listening to the younger guard's stories of the Nightstone being taken by giants in the sky. Stone-throwing giants, he works out, explaining the devastation in the lower town.

Tranio does not draw his prayer out at length, but he's not rushing. He asks "Are there customs that your Lady would want observed?" he asks. Whatever the guard says, he will listen, sitting himself down, nodding. If he asks any questions of them it will be about the Nightstone, and the village once controlled by the Lady Velrosa.

Bethany:

The young guard nods in response to your question. "Yes, an obsidian megalith! The Nandars purposely built their village here as the stone repels dragons. It is common knowledge," the drunk states. The reactions of his allies lead you to believe he is mixing common knowledge and folklore.

Dren:

You're not familiar with any boulder throwing gods. It is more likely that the invaders, though uncommon and spectacular, were still of the natural world.

Tranio:

The old guard bows his head during your prayer and seems thankful for it. " The Lady would want to be with her husband again. Lord Nandar's bones are in the village crypt. He was slewn about a year ago, in cold blood, by one of those savages," the guard explains as he eyes Eldrath again.

The Turami guard then slams her fist on the table. "The only thing Lady Nandar would want is for us to save the villagers!"

Fistan had so far remained silent, but the guard mentioned saving the villagers Fistan confirmed, "That would be her duty, even in death. If she has imparted that duty onto you then her death is indeed a great loss." He pauses briefly out of respect then continues, "She has an heir? Perhaps they will offer help."

Fistan contemplates what has been said for a few seconds then says to no one in particular. "Twenty feet tall? Even allowing for some exaggeration that suggests maybe Ogre's though I don't know of them having the ability to float from the sky on clouds. And as strong as they are , I can't think that they could do this much damage."

Dren mused on the guard’s words. “Did these gods take the villagers with them?” he asked. “We found goblins in town. Perhaps we can assist somehow while you give the Lady her proper rites.”

Fistan:

You recall that Lord Nandar had no children and several brothers. The number and names escape you, but last year's noble gossip does not. At every dinner party, you were forced to hear all about Lord Nandar's murder by Ardeep elves and how his siblings were all too eager to steal the land away from his Widow.

Given the size of the creatures described, the first thing that springs to your mind is giants. You've never met one and and the fables describe them as fat, slobbering oafs. However, you shared ale with an older wizard once. He claimed that common giants are just the rejects of the species. An evil god created superior versions that can live in fire and water. Perhaps some even have domain over the skies?

Everyone:

The young drunken soldier does a double take. "Goblins? There weren't any goblins during the siege. Those buggers must have sneaked in after."

"During the attack we were unable to defend the villagers. Most of the guards were up in the keep when the bridge was destroyed," the Turami woman explains. "Morak sprang into action. He's the tavern owner and a former adventure. Morak ordered the draw bridge down and lead the villagers away from harm."

The old guard scoffs at this. "That was three whole days ago. Face it. They're all dead," he says with disgust. " I'm sure they were killed by those sky bastards or the ear seekers. Hell, even if the dwarf lead them to the bat caves, who's to say something more dangerous wasn't waiting there?"

OOC: errr.... to the bat cave?

His face saddens as he recalls the recent history of the Nandar family. These poor people were in for decades of squabbles and misrule by greedy prospective rulers, but he kept that to himself. Thy had suffered enough for now, let them have what peace they could.

He did, however voice his thoughts on possible giants, "They ususally keep to themselves, so if something has brought them here, we could be in for trouble. The villagers may know something, so perhaps we should try to find them. We have somewhere to start our search at least."
