But why reason 2, other than reason 1? I mean, they're still hosting all their 3E stuff, and all that does is extend the lifespan of PF.

It probably is imaginary. Rather, 4e isn't clonable, so there was never any danger of it living on without continuing support, effort was required to keep it alive, none was required to kill it.
They can't kill of 3.x, because they already let the OGL/SRD genie out of the bottle, so don't alienate customers with a ready alternative.

Businessmen do not want to compete with themselves ... the 3e material is competing with the adversaries.
I think Tony Vargas is probably more accurate on this point. The 3E material doesn't compete with PF - it's free, and complementary.

Possibly but only because pathfinder has stuff that goes beyond the 3.x books (like adventures and such)
If you have a product somebody makes something very like it and releases it free ...now your customers really do not need to buy your product not really because a free version exists. I still call that competition,
