D&D 5E Gladiator: Round 3 (River Song vs NPC)

The Game Master sat in his room in Big Town, which was much more luxurious than the one in Small Town. At least here he had a proper room slave. He took his hood off, revealing his slightly pointed ears framing his all too human face, and closed his eyes. He needed a vacation. A long one. Its not that he minded watching the death and dying. He just needed to get away.

Oh well. It was time.

With a flourish he was once again on his pedestal overseeing the arena. This one was larger than the one in Small Town. The arena itself was still only a hundred feet across, but it was surrounded on all sides by seating that fit a good ten thousand people, and it was moderately full. People had heard of this small girl who seemed to kill with a look, and they wanted to see her for themselves.

The Arena was set up differently, of course. This one had actual wooden structures. The combatants would enter from either side, as before, only this time they would enter on a bridge that led to a small stage on either side. Stairs led down from the stage to the battlefield, but on the stage itself were a number of protective walls set in place, allowing the combatants to easily hide from spellcasters or ranged combatants.

In the middle of the battlefield where also a number of walls set up for the same reason. This allowed for a much more evenly matched fight than the ones in Small Town.

OOC: The green lines are walls that provide full cover when hidden behind. All combatants are told this, and informed they are there to disrupt sight lines, and allow for cover against spells and ranged attacks.

An old man shuffles from the left side of the arena, leaning heavily on a staff made of wood. He looks left and right, squinting against the light. The crowd cheers him well enough, and he waves, a goofy smile on his face.

Jarish looks across the field at his opponent, and hits his staff against the wood at his feet a few times, as if to get his barring.

Giovanni waves to the crowd and bows removing his feathered hat with a flourish. Looking across the arena at the old man he was not deceived by his apparent weakness, old people are old for a reason!

OOC: Ha ha, Wow! That's amazing! Here's what happened.

Jarish saw the arrows fly towards him, and flourished with his staff, creating a field of energy between him and the arrows. Despite his best efforts, one of the arrows broke through his energy shield, slamming through a secondary ward that appeared around his skin, and drove itself into his abdomen. The other arrow, at least, was deflected away.

Jarish stumbled, in pain. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, straight piece of iron, and twirled it in his fingers as he spoke an arcane language. when finished, a wave of energy flew at his opponent.

OOC: Reaction: Cast Shield. Jarish had Mage Armor on when he came in, giving him a 15 AC, and with Shied that became 20. Deflected the second arrow, but not the first. It would have killed him outright anyway, except he's an Abjuration Wizard, and had his Ward up, granting him 9 extra HP.

Action: Cast Hold Person on Giovanni. Giovanni must make a Wisdom Saving Throw, DC 13, or be paralyzed for one minute. If he becomes paralized, he can make a new saving throw at the end of each of his turns to end the effect early.

This next arrow flew harmlessly past Jarish, who still hadn't moved from his spot. He frowned. That really should have worked.

Oh well, no point dwelling on it. He liked arrows, he would get an arrow. Jarish reached into his pouch and drew out a vile of powdered rhubarb leaf and the stomach of an adder, waved them around, and flung his hand at Giovanni. A green spectral arrow flew across the arena towards his target.

OOC: Attack: Melf's Acid Arrow. Attack role: [roll]1d20+3

Leaning to one side, Gio watches the arrow sail past. Interesting, he thought. I wonder if I can shoot those from my bow?

"Sorry grandfather," he laughs. "But you will have to do better than that!"

Selecting an arrow and taking careful aim he launches another arrow at the old man. The arrow flies true and strikes solidly.
