Adi immediately realizes that Raven Elk must have been oversimplifying matters, as there seems to be no feasible method to simply flip the bug and elects to just smack it, hoping to catch it where the top plate meets the bottom.
Seeing Adi's technique, Raven Elk actually cracks a smile:

"Looks like you've got the method down!"

Since the bugs are on the group quicker than he anticipated, Taylar abandons his plan of throwing rocks and golf-club swings into the closest beetle.
GM: Taking a few steps forward just to increase his momentum, Taylar gives full might to his first blow.

OOC: Taylar: 11(Fury) + 20(Lethality) + 23(Attack) + 75(d100) = 129
Beetle: 4(Defensiveness) + 8(Defend) + 60(d100) = 72
Damage: 129 - 72 = 57% * 10 = 6 - 2(soak) = 4
Mind: 2 - 4 = -2: unconscious
Body: 4 - 2 = 2: hurt

GM: At this point the party is 4 for 4. These beetles look more vicious than the last, but they seem to be falling more readily.

Maka and the remaining beetles react last.

Maka, seeing that clubbing the beetles has proven to be effective, intends to club his beetle where the top plate meets the bottom.
GM: As Maka swings the two beetles approaching him, along with the one remaining on each of the others, sprays a clear liquid from a gland on the front of its head.

OOC: Beetle: 20(Muddle) + 60(d100) = 80
Maka: 10(Skepticism) + 11(Tranquility) + 62(d100) = 83
Raven Elk: 12(Skepticism) + 10(Tranquility) + 91(d100) = 113
Vittero: 15(Skepticism) + 10(Tranquility) + 87(d100) = 112
Taylar: 12(Skepticism) + 9(Tranquility) + 75(d100) = 96
Adisakti: 11(Skepticism) + 10(Tranquility) + 83(d100) = 104

GM: This particular spray seems more concentrated than that of the carrion beetles, yet everyone is able to ignore its intended muddling effect.

OOC: Maka: 11(Fury) + 21(Lethality) + 22(Attack) + 62(d100) = 116
Beetle: 4(Defensiveness) + 8(Defend) + 60(d100) = 72
Damage: 116 - 72 = 44% * 10 = 4 - 2(soak) = 2
Mind: 2 - 2 = 0: unconscious

GM: Maka's blow is not quite as well placed as he would have hoped, but it was effective, nonetheless.

OOC: Sequencing needs to be redetermined. Roll 1d100. Post results on LINE.

GM:
OOC: Sequencing: (order of action)

  • Impetus (Collegiate Task) +
  • Body + Motility +
  • Mind + Knowledge +
  • Commercial
This passive technique is used to determine the initial reaction time with regard to combat. A single combat sequence comprises all actions possible in ONE SECOND of time, which is divided into 100 equal parts called tics. Not all characters will be able to act in the first second, especially when using slow weapons.

Raven Elk: 10(Impetus) + 20(Sequence) + 83(d100) - 24(armor) - 50(weapon) = 39
Maka: 11 + 21 + 72(d100) - 22(armor) - 50(weapon) = 32
Vittero: 10 + 22 + 99(d100) - 24(armor) - 50(weapon) = 57
Taylar: 9 + 20 + 73(d100) - 24(armor) - 50(weapon) = 28
Adisakti: 10 + 19 + 44(d100) - 24(armor) - 50(weapon) = -1
Beetles: 0 + 8 + 80(d100) - 20(bite) = 68

GM: The remaining beetles, fully intent on aggressively protecting the food source, launch themselves into the air at each of their respective opponents clipping at them with their enlarged, pincher-like mandibles.
OOC: Beetle: 8(lethality) + 12(attack) + 80(d100) = 100
Vittero: 10(konokoro) + 14(defensiveness) + 99(d100) = 123

Vittero instinctively dodges the beetle, whirling his bow like a staff and spinning in a complete circle to swipe as it goes by.
OOC: Vittero: 11(Fury) + 22(Lethality) + 22(Attack) + 99(d100) + 76(luck) = 230
Beetle: 4(defensiveness) + 8(defend) + 80(d100) = 92
Damage: 230 - 92 = 138% * 10 = 14 - 2(soak) = 12
Mind: 2 - 12 = -10: unconscious
Body: 4 - 10 = -6: dead

Vittero's mighty swing not only contacts with the beetle while it is still in the air, it cracks the body open spraying noxious fumes into the area. Though Vittero resists the effects of the gas, he immediately begins backing away from the broken insect.

Watching his friends having such "sport" with these beetles, Raven Elk is suddenly inspired by the game Begadwe ("little brother war"/Lacrosse. Pronounced --- bag-gat'-ta-way), a game of stickball he and his friends played when they were mere boys. Raven Elk had been quite good at it, (he had been the highest scorer) and used those skills now.

Seeing the first of the flying beetles as the Ball, Raven Elk Squared Up a Star Pass by striking the "Ball" (the beetle} in an effort to "pass" it to the next beetle attacking him, knowing that the other beetle would never be able to Cradle the "Ball" (having no hands, nor a Stick). In this manner, Raven Elk hoped to "kill (or at least wound and disorient them by putting them into an Unsettled Situation) two birds with one stone", as it were. Then , he could Poke Check or Slap Check them into submission --- or death.

As he strikes the first beetle, Raven Elk, caught up in the moment, cries: "BALL!"

When Taylar sees the beetle take into the air in front of him, he marvels at these creatures. He wonders if he found the right material if he could fashion himself a pair of wings. The clacking of the mandibles brings him back to the fight and he shifts his hands on the club into a wider two handed grip. It will be easier to make quick swats at the bugs rather than pull back and try for a big swing.

GM: The beetles reactivity being quicker than Raven Elk's spear, clacks its enlarged mandibles at him before his weapon is ready.
OOC: Beetle: 8(lethality) + 12(attack) + 80(d100) = 100
Raven Elk: 9(Konokoro) + 11(Defensiveness) + 83(d100) = 103

Despite the beetles movement and the slower weapon, Raven Elk's reactivity allows him to avoid the launch.

Damage: 135 - 92 = 43% * 10 = 4 - 2(soak) = 2
Mind: 2 - 2 = 0: unconscious

As Raven Elk exclaims his mark, he knocks the wingward beetle from the air. He does not crack the shell, but the blow is still enough to stun it.

GM: Taylar's adjustment to combat tactics brings his weapon into play faster but not before his second beetle is up on him.
OOC: Beetle: 8(lethality) + 12(attack) + 80(d100) = 100
Taylar: 8(Konokoro) + 9(Defensiveness) + 73(d100) = 90
Damage: 100 - 90 = 10% * 4: ineffective

Though the beetle manages to make contact with its enlarged mandibles, Taylar's defensiveness is enough to render the assault ineffective. He spins his granbaton from the hand position in the middle to attempt to knock the beetle down and away.
OOC: Taylar: 11(Fury) + 20(Lethality) + 23(Attack) + 73(d100) = 127
Beetle: 4(defensiveness) + 8(defend) + 80(d100) = 92
Damage: 127 - 92 = 35% *10 = 4 - 2(soak) = 2
Mind: 2 - 2 = 0: unconscious

Even though the blow was administered one handed, it is enough. The beetle is knock down and stunned.
