Day 88: Investigating the Noise, Mid Morning

Indigo commands the pack animals to walk a short distance into the tree line to the south away from the disturbance, though they would much rather much on the fresh corn stalks

Sheldon rolls his head around and stretches, having no weapon to draw. Once the pack are moving Indigo draws her new steel sabers, liking the feel of them. Both Sheldon and Indigo move to the left flank the back up Tor, pacing themselves about half way between him and the remaining Merin.

Turtle is certain that he knows that particular set of noises, but he does not recall hearing them so distinctly before. As everyone moving draws in, the largest beetles anyone has ever seen are chomping their way in a direct path toward Merin and Myth, seemingly oblivious to their surroundings. The large beetles normally encountered whose carapaces are collected for Maeli are about the size of a man's head. These particular ones are about the size of a man's torso and might easily weigh 100 bricks.

Merin mentally urges Myth to go help Turtle, as he prepares to paralyze the lead beetle.

Myth, sensing that Merin's tactic is sound, and that a side-swipe would be safer than a frontal charge, slinks around to the right, headed towards Turtle's position, with the intent of aiding him if and when he moves to strike.

If one of the beetles passes next to Tor, he will time his attack to hit it from behind, using his sword, augmented with cold.

Sannit attempts to infuse the tip of his spear with heat as he steps up to stab one of the beetles at the crease in its carapace.

Using one of her flint tips, Bolo heats the arrowhead and fires at the head of the closest beetle.

Turtle will follow Sannit and strike at the legs of the beetle he is engaged with.

Day 88: Combat, Part 1

GM:
OOC: Sequencing: (order of action)
A single combat sequence comprises all actions possible in ONE SECOND of time which is divided into 100 equal parts called tics. Not all characters will be able to act in the first second, especially when using slow weapons or tasks requiring prolonged thought.

Impetus (Collegiate Task) +
Body + Motility + Flexibility +
Mind + Knowledge + Wisdom +
Commercial + Athletic +
d100

Impetus:
Affect: Self
Effectiveness: Essence + Cohesion + Evocation + Emulsion +
Mind + Will + Discipline + Resolve +
Collegiate + Aberrative / Academic / Theologic + Manifest Will / Ayurveda / Faith / Philosophy

This must be a constant task. It is used to augment the speed of a character's ability to initiate action under the Athletic Task of Sequencing.

Merin: 56 + 50 + 99 = 205
Tor: 51 + 45 + 88 = 204
Bolo: 56 + 49 + 96 = 201
Sannit: 44 + 52 + 97 = 193
Sheldon: 56 + 54 + 51 = 161
Indigo: 50 + 60 + 42 = 152
Saemund: 46 + 44 + 52 = 142
Turtle: 0 + 35 + 83 = 118
Beetles: 0 + 24 + 85 = 109
Myth: 0 + 29 + 62 = 91

Day 88: Combat, Part 2

Merin mentally urges Myth to go help Turtle, as he prepares to paralyze the lead beetle.
GM:
OOC: Paralyze:
Affect / Range: Adhesion + Will
Effectiveness: Essence + Adhesion +
Mind + Knowledge + Will +
Collegiate + Aberrative + Machination
d100

This causes the inexplicable loss of Motility, Strength, and Body in the intended target. The target must be a person, a coatl, or a dragon. If the Motility or Strength of the intended target is reduced below 1, the target is paralyzed and cannot physically move. If Body is reduced below 1, the target is incapacitated, though still conscious. Motility and Strength are reduced simultaneously, followed by Body.

Rend:
Affect / Range: Adhesion + Will
Effectiveness: Essence + Adhesion +
Mind + Knowledge + Will +
Collegiate

This causes an inexplicable loss of Body in an intended target. If the target's Body is reduced below 1, it becomes incapacitated.

Merin: 55 + 82 = 137
Resist: 32 + 86 = 118
Damage: 137 - 118 = 19% * 17 = 3
Body = 10 - 3 = 7: hurt

Once the threat is identified, Merin stands from his crouched position, reacting before anyone else. Understanding that his more advanced technique of Paralysis will only be effective against people, he chooses the more mundane technique of Rend. The lead beetle, hurt by the assault, squeaks loudly and emits a particularly acrid odor while spitting at Merin.

Merin easily avoids the viscous bolus of spittle, but the acrid aroma has an unexpectedly negative effect.

GM:
OOC: Dementia Haze:
Affect: Health + Confluence + Fortitude
Effectiveness: Body + Health + Fortitude +
Essence + Confluence + d100
Resist: Essence + Mind + Cohesion + Will + d100

This pheromonal excretion is a natural substance that, when inhaled, causes acute onset Dementia (loss of Persona).

Beetle: 52 + 53 = 105
Resist: 36 + 64 = 100
Damage: 105 - 100 = 5% * 20 = 1
Persona = 7 - 1 = 6: insignificant

GM:
OOC: Frost:
Affect / Range: Confluence + Will
Effectiveness: Essence + Confluence
Mind + Knowledge + Will
Collegiate + Aberrative +
d100

This causes the intended target to lose body heat unnaturally (loss of Body). This can also be used to extinguish a small fire.

Lethal Attack:
Fury (Collegiate Task) + Lethality (Commercial Task) +
Body + Strength + Might +
Mind + Knowledge
Combat + Melee

This tasks requires the use of a weapon, though any sharp object held in the hand and used to strike an opponent is considered a weapon for the purpose of determining the outcome of this task. Lethal attacks are intended to damage the body of an opponent. They may also cause a loss of mental faculty (loss of Mind) and ultimately death (loss of Essence).

Fury:
Affect: Self
Effectiveness: Essence + Confluence +
Mind + Persona +
Collegiate + Aberrative

This must be a constant task. It is used to augment the outcome of other non-Collegiate tasks, such as physical attacks or leaping.

Lethality:
Body + Motility
Mind + Knowledge
Commercial

This task implies a study of anatomy and vital areas best targeted during combat. As this tasks is specifically applied to augment combat, Collegiate Enhancement is not applicable.

Frost: 46 + 81 = 127
Resist: 42 + 97 + 93 = 232: resisted
Tor's Attack: 47 + 45 + 55 + 91 = 238
Damage = 238 - 55 = 183% * 33 = 60 - 16(soak) = 44
Body = 10 - 44 = -34: incapacitated
Mind = 2 - 34 = -32: unconscious
Essence = 10 - 32 = -22: dead

Tor advances on the seemingly oblivious beetle trailing in the rear of the pod, severing its head from its thorax in a well aimed mighty blow, despite the visible frost collecting on the blade not effecting this particular bug. When the beetle dies, it emits the same acrid aroma Merin experienced.

GM: Beetle: 52 + 72 = 124
Tor: 36 + 50 = 86
Damage: 124 - 86 = 38% * 22 = 8
Persona: 6 - 8 = -2: deluded
Mind: 10 - 2 = 8

Tor looks down at his sword severing the body of the beetle and can't remember why he is holding it. He drops the blade and turns to begin wandering aimlessly.

Using one of her flint tips, Bolo heats the arrowhead and fires at the head of the closest beetle.
GM:
OOC: Enflame:
Affect / Range = Confluence + Will
Effectiveness = Essence + Confluence +
Mind + Knowledge + Will + Wisdom +
Collegiate + Academic + d100

The causes the intended target to burst into flame. This can be used to start a fire if applied to naturally flammable substances or to cause harm (loss of Body) to the intended target.

Shoot:
Projection (Collegiate Task) + Trajectory (Commercial Task) +
Body + Motility +
Mind + Knowledge + Wisdom +
Combat + Projectile + d100

The Shoot Task, of course, requires the use of some type of bow, though anything from simple to mechanical qualifies. The Throw Task does not require special weaponry but considers any object launched by hand, even bullets from a sling. Fired or thrown projectiles are designed to cause lethal damage (loss of Body); and if significant enough, can also cause the loss of mental faculties (loss of Mind) and possibly death (loss of Essence).

Projection:
Range: Self
Effectiveness: Essence + Cohesion +
Mind + Will +
Collegiate + Academic

This must be a constant task. It is used to augment Combat tasks involving projectile weapons.

Trajectory:
Body + Motility + Flexibility +
Mind + Knowledge + Wisdom +
Commercial + Athletic

This task considers the training of hand-eye coordination and is used to augment the Combat Projectile Skill.

Enflame: 70 + 87 = 157
Resist: 42 + 95 = 137
Damage: 157 - 137 = 20% * 19 = 4
Bolo: 56 + 49 + 58 + 94 + 60 = 317
Damage: 317 - 55 = 262% * 20 = 52 - 16(soak) = 36 + 4 = 40

Bolo consentrates on the arrow head momentarily and it suddenly glows red with heat. She draws and lets it fly, though thee arrow will contact its target after Sannit reacts.

Collegiate

Lethality:

Heat: 37 + 55 = 92
Resist: 42 + 87 = 129: resisted
Sannit: 46 + 52 + 64 + 67 = 229
Damage: 229 - 55 = 174% * 22 = 38 - 16(soak) = 22
Body: 10 - 22 = -12: incapacitated
Mind: 2 - 12 = -10: unconscious
Essence: 10 - 10 = 0: dead

Having advanced enough in skill, Sannit no longer has to touch the head of his weapon to heat it. It does not quite glow with the brightness of Bolo's arrow head, but the heat is unneeded, anyway. Thrusting finely between the plates of the thorax and the abdomen, Sannit's blow proves fatal; but if it had not, Bolo's arrow explodes through its head a few tics after. As with Tor's kill, the beetle emits an acrid odor as it dies engulfing both Sannit and Turtle. Bolo is out of range.

Kwargrow said:
Turtle will follow Sannit and strike at the legs of the beetle he is engaged with.
Turtle swipes his claw at the huge bug, though it is already dead when the claw makes contact. He rolls the skewered beetle on its side as the pheromone emits.

GM: Sannit:
Beetle: 52 + 95 = 147
Resist: 33 + 60 = 93
Damage: 147 - 93 = 54% * 20 = 11
Persona: 8 - 11 = -3: deluded
Mind: 10 - 3 = 7

Turtle:
Beetle: 52 + 53 = 105
Resist: 29 + 87 = 116: resisted

As the toxin engulfs him, Sannit leans on his spear staring mindlessly at the dead beetle, fascinated by the pooling fluids spilling from its wound. Turtle spins in a circle and rubs his nose with the back of his paw. He then back away from the bug, wondering how Sannit can just stand there in that awful smell.

Day 88: Combat, Part 4

As Sheldon pauses momentarily to generate an electric jolt, Indigo rushes past him to test the metal of her new sabers, barely a heartbeat separating the action of the two.
GM: Indigo: 52 + 60 + 50 + 87 = 249
Damage: 249 - 55 = 194% * 22 = 43 - 16(soak) = 27
Body: 10 - 27 = -7: incapacitated
Mind: 2 - 7 = -5: unconscious
Essence: 10 - 5 = 5

Indigo slices her sword between the head and thorax passing through just 11 tics before electricity jolts the already dying beetle.
GM:
OOC: Jolt:
Affect / Range: Adhesion + Will + Discipline
Effectiveness: Essence + Adhesion +
Mind + Knowledge + Will + Wisdom + Discipline +
Collegiate + Theologic + d100

This causes a visible jolt of electricity to fly from the Bender to the desired target causing bodily harm.

Sheldon: 68 + 64 = 132
Resist: 42 + 64 = 106
Damage: 132 - 106 = 26% * 20 = 5
Essence: 5 - 5 = 0: dead

A small, visible, bolt of lightning races from Sheldon's extended hand into the dying beetle ending its life and causing the emission of the toxic pheromone, engulfing both Sheldon and Indigo.

GM: Sheldon:
Beetle: 52 + 90 = 142
Resist: 40 + 61 = 101
Damage: 142 - 101 = 41% * 20 = 8
Persona: 7 - 8 = -1: deluded
Mind: 10 - 1 = 9

Indigo:
Beetle: 52 + 85 = 137
Resist: 36 + 94 = 130
Damage: 137 - 130 = 7% * 20 = 1
Persona: 8 - 1 = 7: insignificant

Having slain the beetle, Sheldon runs his left hand through his hair, turns to his right, and begins walking off for no apparent reason.
