GREYHAWK CY963 GOLDEN ERA CAMPAIGN: HEROES OF DYVERS: CHAPTER 4

Vale Tries The Elven Way...Attack From A Distance

~ Moradin protect us. Clangeddin allow my aim to be true.~

As the others dismount and offer their attacks, Vale slides from his horse (5 ft. move action) and advances, silently nocking an arrow in his Elven bow and drawing the bowstring back in one motion.
He curses to himself in dwarven, releasing the arrow toward Ogre #8.

GM:
You had your attack bonus figured wrong, so I re-rolled your attack with the proper modifiers.
EDIT: I didn't realize my stats for Vale were out-of-date; so I edited this post a SECOND time! :)
Base Ranged Attack: +6
MW Bow: +1
Total Attack Roll: +7

Ogre AC: 16
Kneeling (Because of leg injuries): +2
Total AC: 18

Roll = 14 (+7) = 21 (Hit)

Damage: 1d8+3 (Extra point does not apply, because bow string isn't strong enough.)
Roll = 6 (+3) = 9 pts. Ogre #8 is down. [0, Unconscious, Stable.]

GM:
Vale lets his arrow fly, and it strikes the Ogre squarely in the chest; as with Tam's arrow, it doesn't penetrate as deeply as Vale would have liked. However, it is still enough to drop him. He collapses, unconscious, critically injured, but still breathing. Ogres are made of hardy stock.

Vale curses again, "Take a dirt nap, you cretin."

Thallok hops off his horse, and grabs the elven strongbow. With his two arrows he takes aim at Ogre #7, and says "may these arrows not let me down." He then fires:

first shot=16
second shot=19

If those hit

first damage=6
second damage=4

Luckily for Thallok, Ogre #7 is of hardier stock than most of his fellows. He (along with Ogres #1 and #2) is still standing, not kneeling, like his weaker comrades are; it is a fantastic display of strength and courage. However, it also makes him a more accessible target.

GM:
Ogre #7 AC: 16
Ogre #7 takes 10 pts. of damage.
Ogre #7 is down. [-1, Dying]

Thallok's arrows are true, one striking the Ogre in the chest, the other in his gut; the Ogre doubles over, the pain finally too much for him, and slumps to the ground, where he begins to bleed out among the spikey stones.

GM:
Initiative Order (Still Round 3):

Dewydd: 25
Tam-Tam: 23a
Kleborn: 23b
Vale: 23c
Thallok: 20a
Orcs: 20b
Lathir: 17
Sylvar: 12
Ogres: 2

As the Ogre is collapsing, two of the Orcs are returning fire; one of the Orcs panics, and trying to escape the spike stone area. It is a fatal mistake. The stone spikes easily skewer the fleeing Orc, who collapses into a dying heap.

GM:
Orc #1: Fires arrow at Tam-Tam. (22) -2 For Range = (20) = Hit. 1 pt. of damage. The arrow scratches Tam.
Orc #2: Fires arrow at Vale. (11) -2 For Range = (9) = Miss.
Orc #3: Takes damage from spike stones: 9 pts. Orc #3 is down. [-7, Dying]

At this range, it's difficult for the Orcs to hit anything with their short bows. Orc #2 misses Vale by a mile; Orc #1 has a little better aim, but Tam is able to duck just in time, and the arrow only nicks him.

GM:
Tam-Tam has taken 1 pt. of damage.

Lathir / Vulture circles low and swoops in toward the pinned foes, not close enough to be within reach. He takes no offensive action, however, seeing that the archers have things well in control.

From his vantage point in the air, he will also scan the area to make sure there are no surprises developing for the rest of the party.

GM: Since I know you looked at the map carefully, and that you can clearly see that only Orcs #1 and #2 are still standing, I am assuming that you mean OGRES #5 and #6, so I changed your post to reflect those targets.

Sylvar gets as close as he can and fire an arrow from his composite bow at Ogre #6. He whispers the name Uller as he draws and releases the projectile.

OOC: First attack roll 28 (natural 18...possible crit) Confirm critical roll 18 crit confirmed.
Damage roll first attack damage roll = 10
second attack 17, damage roll second attack 3, if possible Sylvar will change targets and attack Ogre 5 with second shot.

GM:
Ogre #6: 10 pts. damage. Ogre #6 is down. [-1, Dying.]
Ogre #5: Because he is kneeling, and his AC is 18, the second arrow misses.

GM:
Sylvar lets two more arrows fly, and the first one strikes true, burying itself into the Ogre's belly, causing him to pass out from the intensity of the pain.

Sylvar's second arrow narrowly misses Ogre #5, passing within an inch over the top of his head.

The Ogres Strike Back!

GM: Movement Action:

The Ogre Leader, who has remained standing this whole time, reaches into his bag, and pulls out two objects: a long-necked potion bottle, and a crystal disc. He tosses the disc to Ogre #2, and says, "Break the disc!"

GM: Standard Action:

The Ogre Leader drinks the potion, slings the empty bottle aside, and screams: "Javelins at the ready! Fire!"

GM:
Ogre Leader is healed for 2d8+3: Cure Moderate Wounds = 17 pts.
Ogre Leader current hit pts: 26 pts.

As the Ogre Leader screams the command, the majority of his wounds vanish!

GM:
Ogre #1 Competency check: get object into Ogre #2's square = Hit AC 5 with Ranged Touch Attack. (7) = Hits.
Ogre #2 Competency check: catch thrown object. Dex check DC 10. (9) = FAIL.
Ogre #2 spends a movement action to bend over and retrieve the disc on the ground.
Ogre #2 Competency check: retrieve disc without skewering himself: Dex check DC 5. (4) = FAIL.
Ogre #2 retrieves disc, but loses his balance and falls on the spikes. 1d8+1d4 damage = 7 pts.
Ogre #2 is grievously wounded, but still standing.

GM: Movement Action:

Ogre #2 bends over to pick up the disc he dropped; he trips while doing so, mutilating his legs even further, but somehow, he manages to keep his head, and pick up the disc.

GM: Standard Action:

Ogre #2 crushes the crystal disc in his massive hand. Another Ogre, dressed in purple robes, and carrying a rune-covered Naginata suddenly appears!

GM:
TO BE CONTINUED!

Ogre Attack Part 2

The robed Ogre appears next to Ogre #4, because of the crowded conditions of the battlefield. He immediately suffers injury to his feet and legs, screaming in surprise!

GM:
Ogre "M": 1d4+1d8 damage = (8) Ogre "M" is lightly wounded.

GM:
Ogre "M" Initiative Roll for next round: (8)

The other Ogres, having heard their leader's command, throw their javelins at the party in unison.

GM:
Ogre #6 = 95 ft. from Vale (-6 penalty to hit)
Ogre #5 = 105 ft. from Vale (-6 penalty to hit)
Ogre #3 = 105 ft. from Tam (-6 penalty to hit)
Ogre #4 = 115 ft. from Tam (-6 penalty to hit)

Ogre #6 throws at Vale (0) Miss
Ogre #5 throws at Vale (-1) Miss
Ogre #3 throws at Tam (3) Miss
Ogre #4 throws at Tam (7) Miss

The Ogres choose the closest opponents, but the range is simply too great; all of the javelins land VERY FAR off their intended marks.

GM:
Initiative Order For Round 4:

Dewydd: 25
Tam-Tam: 23a
Kleborn: 23b
Vale: 23c
Thallok: 20a
Orcs: 20b
Lathir: 17
Sylvar: 12
Ogre "M": 8
Ogres: 2

GM:
Dewydd's distance from Ogre "M": 105 ft. (Short range, no penalty.)
Attack #1: 20 (Hit)
Attack #2: 11 (Miss)
Attack #3: 6 (Miss)
Damage: 8 pts.

Dewydd takes aim at the new arrival, and lets 3 arrows fly; but only one of the deadly trio finds its mark. The arrow thuds into the Ogre's shoulder, causing him a significant injury. He grimaces, as he turns his attention to the party.

GM:
Ogre "M" damage taken (total): 16 pts.

Tam-Tam: It's your turn! What do you do?

Waynan

Adventurer
Tam-Tam, a bit miffed at being struck by an Orcan arrow, marches forward 20 ft. (4 squares) and fires two arrows at the offending Orc (#1).

First: 11
Second: 7

After firing off two precious Elven arrows, he guesses he shouldn't shoot when he's angry.

Tellerian Hawke

Defender of Oerth
Tam's arrows miss almost as badly as the Ogres' javelins; 105 feet is just not a good range for a short bow.

GM:
Number of arrows that MIGHT be recoverable: 2
Arrow #1: (50%) +1 (60%) = 90 (Broken)
Arrow #2: (50%) +1 (60%) = 73 (Broken)
Sorry, Tam.
