I love to use background music during gaming sessions and I tend to try and build Spotify playlists for campaigns. I'm sure many of you have the same system in place.

Let's share some of our lists, I'm sure it will help others as the curated music always better than random. Respond to this message with links to your Spotify lists and mention in few words what the playlist is all about (style, atmosphere, game genre or such).

Dungeons & Dragons playlist on Spotify

Here is my currently building massive epic fantasy list that I will be breaking down into more structured lists at some point. Sort of a baseline for picking right material out of.

I also created a few more pure ambience backgrounds for blacksmith, tavern and ancient temple:

A lot of people use music to enhance their gaming experiences, so several threads on the topic have popped up. Fellow ENWorlder Mark CMG even made a thread collecting them- see the link in my sig.

It depends on what I'm doing..when I was taking classes I'd listen to Lindsey Stirling while doing school work and when I'm in the mood for writing story wise I'll attempt to find music that matches the tone of the story.

I love using a combination of background music and noice generators.

For the music, I have a library of select game-soundtracks, the songs of which I have arranged into 4 playlists:

-Battle (as the name implies)
-Ominous (eerie music for suspense)
-Rural (peaceful music for wilderness and villages)
-Tavern (as the name implies. Also used for larger cities)

The soundtracks I use are mainly from the 3 Elder Scrolls games (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim) because I find them to be suitably atmospheric and not "in your face". Also, Baldur's Gate 1&2, Icewind Dale1&2, Neverwinter Nights 1&2, Pillars of Eternity and World of Warcraft. I also have some Baroque lute music that fits nicely.

As for noise, I use "mynoise" which I find excellent. The generators are very customizable and you can find pretty much everything you need: dungeons, sewers, battle, rain, wind, fire, spooky, wilderness wildlife, flowing water, waves, as well as lots of modern noises (ehich of course I don't use in a fantasy setting)

I use Syrinscape to create playlists that I can toggle between. I can preload them on my computer, so I don't need an internet connection (and don't have to worry about YouTube ads).

I'm running a game with four paladin PCs, so I've nabbed a lot of soundtracks composed by Shiro Sagisu. He's done music for the rebuild of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Berserk, Shin Godzilla, and the movie Bleach Hell Verse. There's a lot of chanting in English that sounds like Latin choirs.

Aside from that, I've grabbed fan covers of video game music, based on tone.

This is one I’ve used more than once.

Few longer background music mixes for exploration / elven woods:

I queue up a number of soundtracks, some Two Steps from Hell, some video game themes, some new age - then put it on shuffle. I don't try to create a specific mood for any specific part, but have semi-appropriate music that doesn't have lyrics.
