HEROES OF DYVERS CHAPTER 5

Sylvar B.

Explorer
Sylvar looks at the chaos enveloping him, its all happening in slow motion...the blood spraying from Dewyyd's blade is almost beautiful the way it catches the light. He sees Nosnra trying to run. Scanning the room he makes eye contact with Vulka... there's rage in her eyes...he remembers a story he had heard once.

Princess Vulka, the giant...Evil beyond measure. Ambitious and willing to do whatever is needed to meet her goals. She caught her cousin trying to undermine her power and had him skinned alive, drawn and quartered. His remains fed to the dire wolves.

She cannot escape, our fate is tied to hers.

Sylvar casts Grease on a ten foot square with Vulka in the upper middle.

GM:
You actually don't have the range to affect Vulka, because she is 55 ft. away, and your range is 50 ft. However, I'm gonna let you fudge it, just to move the game along. Next time, please note the range of your spells.

Fry 'Em Up, Sylvar!

Sylvar points his finger at Vulka, and the floor beneath her suddenly becomes slick with grease! She and the Giant next to her (Hill Giant #6) wobble and scramble to maintain their balance, a look of surprise on their faces! Both of them manage to keep their balance, at least for the time being.

GM:
Grease DC 14:
Vulka's save = 24 = Success
Hill Giant's save = 23 = Success

However, the Grease spell has a secondary effect, which immediately becomes painfully obvious; the floor, which is already extremely hot from the heat of the Fire Wall, begins to sizzle, causing the grease to pop and splatter on the two giants, making the burning even more painful.

GM:
Vulka will take 3d6+11 this round (instead of 2d6+11)
Hill Giant #6 will take 2d4+1d6 this round (instead of 2d4)

Vulka, seeing that her situation is worsening with each passing moment, decides to brave the spikes, charging through them with a desperation borne of fear. As she begins to catch up with her husband, she steps up onto the ledge of the fire pit, and pulls a potion from her belt, drinking it greedily.

GM:
Grease DC: 14 Base, +4 from running: DC: 18.
Vulka's save = 20 = Success.
Vulka takes 3d6+11 fire damage. (18 pts.)
Vulka charges through 40 feet of spikes (8d8) (46 pts.)
Vulka must save 8 times vs. DC 21; 21, 16, (Failed on second try)
Vulka has taken a total of 199 pts. damage. Vulka is in SEVERELY WOUNDED.
Potion of Cure Serious = 3d8+7 = Vulka is healed for 12 pts.
Vulka has taken a total of 187 pts. of damage. Vulka is still SEVERELY WOUNDED.

Vulka's flight is impressive, as she fights through the pain of multiple injuries, her legs badly mauled by her movement. The potion stops the bleeding, but does little else; Vulka is in terrible condition. But she is out of the fire, and in a good position near the edge of the spike field. She is still in a position to affect the outcome of this battle. But for now, she has done all that she can.

Prince Delliak Speaks!

Prince Delliak, who is tall, even considering his young age, towers above Dewydd at a staggering height of 13’6”. His morning star, which is a black, dull metal (probably iron) and covered in red, glowing runes, is a good three feet taller than he is. It is the Cloud Giant equivalent of a polearm, but he wields it with the same ease with which Dewydd wields his Greatsword.

Delliak smiles at Dewydd, and says, “Прийшов час залишити цей світ, похмурий маленький черв'як!”

[sblock=If you speak Giant]”t’s time for you to leave this world, squishy little worm!”[/sblock]

GM:
Attack #1: 36 (Hit, destroys image)
Attack #2: 45 (Hit, destroys image)
Attack #3: 27 (Miss)

Delliak swings his mighty weapon, and Dewydd cringes as the blows land on his Mirror Images, destroying both of them. One of those could just as easily have been him. Delliak, rather than being angry, seems to be amused.

Delliak, speaking Common: “Impressive! I enjoy an opponent who has a few tricks up his sleeve! Nevertheless, you shall fall victim to Mountain Breaker, like all the others. You can run, but you’ll only die tired!”

Dewydd has survived his first close-up encounter with the Cloud Giant Prince! But seeing the divots in the stone floor left behind by the big Morning Star (“Mountain Breaker?”) gives Dewydd small comfort. He no longer has the extra images to take those mighty blows for him. The Blur spell is still active, but it did nothing to save the images from harm. Dewydd knows better than to rely upon it for the entirety of his safety.

Chief Nosnra is up next! Stay tuned!

Nosnra and The Elders take action! The party's front-liners are STUCK!

Nosnra, whom the party was wishfully thinking to be in the process of fleeing, steps up out of the spikes, onto the ledge of the fire pit. Holding the black (probably iron) rune blade in his hands, he holds the blade high, as he begins to chant. All party members can see the glint of shiny, translucent, green goo, which covers the entire length of the dark blade. It is obviously coated in poison.

Nosnra chants, "Gece ölülerde, bu gece Lolth'a karşı olanları öldürmek için örümcek ısırıyor; gazabından, düşmanlara karşı zehirden korkanlardan ve Drow kin'i koruanlar, görkemli şifalarda, Lolth'un gücünü onurlandırmak için bu bıçağı kullanan şövalyeyi güçlendirirler."

[sblock=If you speak Giant]"In the dead of night, comes The Spider's Bite, to slay those who oppose Lolth this night; fear her wrath, poison to foes. And those who defend Drow kin repose, in healing splendor, strengthen the knight, who wields this blade to honor Lolth's might."[/sblock]

GM:
Nosnra invokes The Spider's Bite.
Nosnra is healed for 13 points.
Nosnra is still in very bad shape; Nosnra has taken a total of 118 pts. damage.

As Nosnra chants the mantra, a pulse of sickly, green energy flows down the blade, and courses over him, healing some of his wounds!

Nosnra nods to Vulka, and says, "Gel, karım, düşmanlarımıza karşı Lolth'un gücünü ortaya çıkaralım. Birlikte güçlüyüz!

[sblock=If you speak Giant]"Come, my wife, let us bring forth the power of Lolth against our foes. Together, we are strong!"[/sblock]

As Nosnra is saying this, Elder Kanor burns to death.

GM:
Elder Kanor takes 13 pts. of fire damage.
Elder Kanor: [-17, Dead.]

Somewhere out of sight of the party, Elder Kurok opens a door, walks into an unknown chamber, and drinks a potion.

GM:
Potion of Cure Moderate: 2d8+7 = 9 pts.
Some of Kurok's wounds disappear.

Elder Kragg waves his hand, causing the floor in a large swath to turn into soggy mud!

GM:
Transmute Rock to Mud
Elder Kragg can affect up to TWENTY 10-foot squares, but does not have line of sight into the hallway.
The affected squares (colored dark brown) are now filled with 10' deep, sucking mud.
Affected creatures are now chest deep in mud!
Movement rate of affected creatures is now 5 feet, provided creature can touch bottom.
All affected creatures now have -2 to AC, and -2 to hit.

Affected creatures include: Dewydd, Lathir, Tam-Tam, and Thallok, as well as Hill Giant #18.
Affected creatures which cannot touch bottom are effectively stuck in place.
Hill Giant #18 is only partially affected due to his height, and to being on the edge of the spell's area (-1 instead of -2.)

Kragg laughs, and says, "Rahatlayın beyler, bir süre burada olacaksınız. Neden bu fırsatı teslim etmiyorsun?"

[sblock=If you speak Giant]"Relax gentlemen, you're going to be here for awhile. Why not take this opportunity to surrender?"[/sblock]

Spell Clarification:

I have been doing some reading, and trying to decide what my "take" is on this spell. Here's what I'm going to go with:

If you are 10'1" or taller, you have a movement rate of 5' within the mud area. That means that you can move 5', or charge 10', or take a 10' double move, etc.

If you are 10'0" or shorter, you must use a FULL-ROUND ACTION (meaning that you don't get to attack or do anything else) to move 5', even if you're just trying to make a 1-square adjustment. The mud is so thick as to prohibit movement, unless you do nothing but concentrate on moving.

If you are on the edge of the area of effect at the beginning of your movement, you will be on dry land when your movement ends. Raising yourself up (think about being on the edge of a swimming pool, and using your arms to push up on) out of the mud area provokes an AoO.

Taking a full-round action to move through the mud area provokes an AoO. (Applies to 10'0" creatures, and shorter)

If, at the end of your movement, you have not cleared the mud area, you sink another 1d4 feet. (To a maximum of 10')

If the mud is over your head, you may hold your breath as per standard rules to avoid suffocation.

Creatures who are completely submerged have full (100%) cover.

Dispel Magic returns the mud to its original state (the spell stating otherwise is, in my opinion, excessive and mean-spirited) and ejects creatures within the area of effect to ground level at their current position. This ejection does NOT cause damage to the ejected creature.

Thallok collects himself after the spell which turned the floor he was standing on into mud. He realizes that he is not sinking at the moment, and is now very angry with the Ogre chef, who managed to put a little bit of hurt on him. He says to the Ogre, "Congratulations, you managed to do what this dumb oaf next to you could not. Luckily for me it is no more than a flesh wound. Which, sadly to say, is unlucky for you." He then turns his falchion on the Ogre and using a Martial Spirit stance, he strikes.

OOC:
first attack = 13
second attack = 6
Haste Attack = 31 Critical (confirmation roll =30
Damage from first attack=14
damage from critical attack =23
total damage = 37

Thallok engages the Ogre in front of him, allowing the thick, mostly-clay mud to support him as he swings the big blade; Thallok knows that trying to move, besides being a Herculean effort, would displace too much of the mud, and cause him to sink. But seeing as how he is content to remain in his place, the mud remains largely undisturbed, and its viscosity actually supports the big, red Orc, although it does hinder his accuracy somewhat.

GM:
NOTE: You only sink if you try to move. If you remain still, and attack, you will not sink.

The first blow that Thallok lands is parried by the Ogre's big meat cleaver, although the blade gets chipped in the process. The Ogre winces as the shockwave travels down his arm, making the bones in his forearm ache!

GM:
First blow = 14 pts. damage.
Lathir is healed for 2 pts.

The thick, firm mud hinders Thallok's riposte, causing him to miss the second attack; however, Thallok takes advantage of the magical speed granted to him by Sylvar's Haste spell, and takes another swipe at the Ogre, this time raking the top of the Ogre's head, nearly scalping him! Blood trickles down from the top of his head, down onto the Ogre's face.

GM:
Third blow (critical) = 23 pts. damage.
Lathir is healed for 4 pts. (2 pts., x 2 for critical)

The Ogre Chef cringes as he realizes the predicament he is in; even bogged down by the mud, Thallok is a serious threat, and will probably be the death of him, unless he can somehow turn the tables of this battle, and quickly!

GM:
No position changes since previous map.

Morale Test: Ogre vs. Giant, Sense Motive.
Giant Bluff = 16
Ogre Sense Motive = 1, 0, 5
The Ogres have failed to sense the Giant’s true motive.

The Giant moves past his Ogre comrades, none of whom take a swipe at him; apparently, they are convinced of the Giant’s good intentions to sound the alarm. The Giant moves out of sight.

The Hill Giant (#18) who is partially in the mud bog attacks Thallok, trying to smash him with his mighty fists. He loses his balance, and one of his swings goes wild; however, his second swing lands true, although Thallok barely feels it. Thallok laughs at the Giant’s weakness.

Another Hill Giant (#17) moves out of the Grave Mist effect, just enough to come within easy reach of Thallok. The Giant smashes Thallok with his fist, also, but it is even less effective than the attack of his colleague. Thallok seems uninjured by the otherwise mighty blow.

The Hill Giants on the tables continue to pick things up and throw them at the party, desperate to contribute to the battle, and still very afraid to brave the spikes, after seeing how badly their other comrades have fared by plowing through them.

In this barrage, most of the party manages to avoid injury, with the exception of Sylvar, who gets badly cut by flying shards of sharp, broken porcelain.

The Ogre Guards are up next! It looks as if they are retrieving their javelins from the quivers on their backs, with an eye toward skewering the closest enemy, aka Thallok! Stay Tuned!

Tellerian Hawke

Defender of Oerth
Death of the Orc Butler!

Ogre #4 and Ogre #5 both target Thallok with Javelins.
Ogre #8 goes somewhere and does something. (Out of sight, actions unknown.)
Ogre #7 bleeds out and dies.

GM:
Distance to Thallok = 55 ft.
Thallok AC: 21 (Due to cover and other modifiers)
Javelin range increment: 30 ft. (55 ft. = -2 to hit.)
Ogre #4: 18 (Miss)
Ogre #5: 12 (Miss)

The javelins sail through the air, and land short of their target, sticking deeply into the mud.

Tiny, seeing that his master has re-positioned himself near the fire pit, moves forward and heels, perching on the ledge of the fire pit as his master has done.

GM:
Tiny takes 1d4 heat damage from the Wall of Fire: 2 pts.
Tiny moves 5 ft. through the spikes (1d8) = 2 pts. damage. Tiny has taken a total of 94 points of damage.
Tiny moves 5 ft. around the ledge, to be nearer to his master. He carefully avoids getting too close to the rotisserie.

The bear seems to be well-trained, and from the looks of it, seems to be expecting help from his master. Perhaps this is not the first time that the bear has been badly wounded in battle.

GM:
H2 Takes 2d4 Fire Damage from the Wall of Fire; 2 pts.
H3 Takes 1d4 Fire Damage from the Wall of Fire; 3 pts.
H2 Charges 20 feet to the ledge of the fire pit, passing through 15 ft. of spikes (3d8); 10 pts. [TOTAL = 12]
H3 Charges 30 feet into the hallway, passing through 10 ft. of spikes (2d8); 6 pts. [TOTAL = 9]
H3 Charges through an un-engaged friendly square (H4); H4 steps out of his way.

Hill Giant #3 charges into the hallway, to meet the new threat! He brings his Greatsword to bear on the Orc butler!

Hill Giant #2 charges toward the fire pit, leaping up onto the ledge, in an effort to reach a position unimpeded by the spikes!

GM:
Orc butler AC: 10 + Dex (2) + Cover (Doorway, 4) = AC: 16
Hill Giant #3 calls 10 points of Power Attack!
Hit Roll = 20 (Possible Crit); Confirm AC 29 (Critical!)
Damage = 4d8+60 = 72 Points of Damage!

Orc Butler: 8th Level Adept [3.5 x 8 = 28, plus CON (18) 4 x 8 = 32, 28+32 = 60 HP]
Orc Butler [-12, Dead]

H2 Distance from Dewydd: 55 ft. (-2 to hit); (23) = miss.

Hill Giant #3, one of the commanders, gets a look of rage in his eye at the betrayal of the Orc butler, and charges him! As he brings his blade down on the vulnerable spellcaster, he says, "Öl, hain kurtçuk!"

The Hill Giant Commander catches the Butler at just the right angle, at his most vulnerable point, and cuts the hapless Orc in half with a single blow!

[sblock=If you speak Giant]"Die, traitorous maggot!"[/sblock]

The Hill Giant who leapt up onto the ledge of the fire pit says nothing, as he grabs one of the two javelins in his back quiver, and throws it at Dewydd; the javelin falls short, missing badly.

Aust Thale

Adventurer
Vale Attmpts To Dispel Magic On The Mud

~ We are as protected from them as they are from us, but this can't last. ~

Vale instinctively attempts to dispel the Elder Stone Giant's rock-to-mud spell in a movement of his index finger on his left hand as if dismissing a fly; the spell fails miserably. Simply a fizzle. This giant's magic is too strong. Frustrated, he curses in dwarven under his breath, little acknowledging the failure. And for the first time, he considers that one or more of them might not leave this fight alive. He telepathically communicates his frustration to Val the Axe, urging it to do something to assist in the battle. "Aye this isn't going well. If ye 'ave any suggestions, now is definitely the time."
