D&D 5E One Shot #3: Lady of the Mist

JustinCase

the magical equivalent to the number zero
Mister Bubbles disembarks quietly, standing near the boats for a few moments to listen. The eerie silence seems unnatural, but not necessarily unpleasant.

The half-orc turns to his companions and shrugs. He opens his mouth, but then closes it again. It seems wrong to break the silence, somehow.

OOC: Perception [roll0]
I guess Mister Bubbles can be second or third in the marching order. Just behind any melee fighters but close enough to start whacking in the first round.

As the boat goes around the island Bilkar offers the potion of healing to anyone wanting it. "One of you should carry this, in case..."

OOC: Perception - [roll0]

Bilkar struggles a little getting out of the boat, the sides being high enough to make it a challenge for his short legs.

He looks around his nose up in the air as he sniffs the air trying to identify any animals in the area.

Round 0

Ivar jumped from the boat, splashing a bit into the water, and hauled it up onto the beach, heedless of the weight of the others inside. He returned to the boat to get his gear as the others clambered out. He grabbed Bilkar by the scruff of his collar and hauled the gnome up and out of the boat, putting him safely on dry ground.

Ivar turned to stare inland at the mist. At least the sun was going down and he could see better. He pulled out his war pick.

OOC: Ivar will take the lead in marching order, if desired.

Lee nods to the dark dwarf to lead the way. She waits till he is thirty feet ahead before quietly sneaking behind (figuring his stomping will help hide her approach), and motions for the others to then follow her.

There are only a very few trees and these are scrawny and hardly cover for anyone. The brush is waist high and the home of dozen upon dozens of rabbits. They scurry everywhere as the group moves deeper into the mist covered island.

A few moments latter the path leads to a few old buildings, and something new.

Just ahead of you is a cluster of four buildings of various sizes. All seem abandoned and near collapse, some with walls crumbling and roofs caved in. On the path leading up to the buildings lies what appears to be a partially armor-clad human skeleton.

Lee
Mr Bubbles

OOC: Investigation [roll0] because you asked for it
Survival [roll1] For tracking if we find anything to tack.
If a rabbit gets close enough he will pet it and quietly talk with it. Asking it about weather, tasty plants, dangers, how the family is doing. If none of them seem to want to talk Bilkar will whisper to the group "Be careful. They are scared."

Bilkar looks around, sinking low, almost touching his cheek to the ground when he sees the rabbits, he softly clicks his teeth to say hello to the rabbits and let them know that we are not there to hurt them. Then searches the ground and foliage for signs of human activity.

The rabbits are indeed scared and Bilkar gets the feeling that it is because he and the others have arrived in the area. The rabbits tell him the last time "two-legs" came to the area the "red-feathers" attacked. Rabbits have no word for war, but the small gnome gets the distinction that there was a great battle here.

Looking around he notices the gear of the fresh skeleton scattered around the area along with more than a dozen grey red-tipped feathers. The tracks are chaotic and all about, but he does notice a set of prints that look to head off into the mist, deeper into the island. Perhaps someone got away, and left their companion behind.

OOC: The skeleton is wearing the heraldry of a Thrisk guard. Torn up red cloak, golden scalemail, and pointed helm. He has a sword still in its sheath, and a quiver (most of the arrows scattered about, but usable), and a shortbow that must have fell from his grip when he was killed, just inches from his outstretched hand.

Continuing to whisper.

"Redfeathers attacked humans. Trap set?" Bilkar points to the Skeleton and the feathers.

"Footprints that way." Bilkar points at the footprints close by and lifts his finger to show the direction the tracks go.

OOC: Nature [roll0]
Does it look like the skeleton has been there for a while? Was the body eaten?
Just want to make sure I have this right that there is a skeleton on the ground but the tracks are fresh?

OOC: The battle was two days ago. And the bloodhawks stripped the body down to the bones. Its clothes are new, but torn up, the body has very little flesh left, but is not old.
