Wildshape suggestions for a 5th level 7HD Druid?

Hey guys, my Monk Druid just not got the first chance to wildshape (5th level druid ability). He has 2 monk levels, so he is a total of 7HD. What would you guys suggest he turn into? Combat situations are good, but any other suggestions are good to, such as the best flying animal? Guard Animal? Burrowing Animal?

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Thanks,

That he has 7 hd doesn't matter for wildshape, it's druid levels that count.

Nice 5 HD animals are:
- dire ape ... large + reach
- lion ... large + pounce + rake + improved grab
- dire hawk ... good for scouting

Maybe a dire badger... so I could burrow if needed....

Except that he is a 5th level Druid... therefore NO large animals till 8th.

The best all-around combat shape at this level seems to be the panther: Medium size, decent stats, Pounce, Improved Grab, and Rake.

Of course, you must be FAMILIAR with the animal form in question.

Has your character seen any of these creatures? Not unless you've been adventuring in the tropics.

...or met other druids or rangers with panther companions
...or spent time with a druid that can assume panther form

Dire Wolverine is fun. Who needs a barbarian when you can rage? :D

Well, it does have a couple drawbacks. You can not enter it the rage voluntarily; you must be wounded first. And you can't exit the rage voluntarily: you fight until you or your opponent is dead. If you're outmatched, there's no retreat.

Depending on what sort of RB your DM is, he might rule that you can't wildshape out while raging . . .
