GameHole Con Hints At An "As Yet Unannounced Setting" for D&D This Year

Thomas Valley, GameHoleCon's Adventurer's League coordinator, is currently asking for volunteer DMs for the show in November. As part of the post he refers to "The premiere of an Epic event set in as yet unannounced setting" and "The premiere of adventures set in as yet unannounced setting".

Ravnica was introduced in 2018, and Eberron support was added to the DM's Guild. Other than that, most of the official D&D stuff has all been set in the Forgotten Realms (Curse of Strahd notwithstanding).

This could be a whole new setting; it might just be a region of the Realms.

In related news, WotC's Nathan Stewart tweeted the word "SPELLJAMMER" a week or so back. He has a history of teasing his Twitter followers with hints about settings which - as yet - haven't come to fruition, so take that with as much or as little salt as you wish!

I can bet Spelljammer will come back, and there is a good reason. It is the perfect franchise for Hasbro to sell toys with action figures and vehicles, and Spelljammer may be the transition to playtest some ideas for a new d20 Modern. Spelljammer is D&D + d20 Past, and it is the perfect "space" to try most risky ideas about clases o races.

The 30 anniversary of Dragonlance was in 2014, and in 2019 will be the 35.

Today the success of the RPG liveplay webseries allows a open door for Ravenloft, perfect for a action gothic-horror. Why? It isn't too violent for teenage public, and horror fans are too used to movies where everybody dies but the final girl. In a action gothic-horror adventure nobody knows who will die or survive. And there is a little space for fans of supernatural romance, or zombie post-apocalypse.

If Hasbro finds the right trick for a videogame adaptation, Birthright is perfect for a Real-Time-Strategy and to be showed like the older brother of "Games of Thrones".

* More novels about Dark Sun could be published but I don't know about the comic was a success or not.

* Sometimes I wonder about the D&D version of "crisis on infinite earths" or "the new 52" by DC or post-Secret Wars/All-New, All-Different by Marvel Comics? How to do it in the right way to allow any little retcon?

Today the D&D YouTube channel posted a LYSK about the "Rule of Threes" - direct nod to Planescape. Fingers crossed.

Of course, our group will be wrapping up our Planescape campaign right about then, so, dang. :)

Yeah, just gave that a watch. It's interesting to note Chris Perkins has mentioned "as you look at D&D books and stories going forward, just pay attention... you may start seeing the number three everywhere. It's like a Next Generation episode". Looks like Planescape (or even Spelljammer) may be on the horizon!

As 5e has stepped away from alignments, it'll be interesting to see how 5e handles the alignment-encapsulating Outer Planes and the old alignment exemplars.

And this week on twitch they recorded two LYSK segments. One was on the Forgotten Realms three dead gods. There other was on the Nine Hells. At the end of each segment Chris and Greg had a brief interaction that strongly hinted that both segments had topics that would relate to future products. Both of those interactions will probably get edited out before posting to YouTube or podcast. Not that they really revealed anything.

Perkins getting so specific about Planescape elements and characters, and talking about the Waffle Crew going to Sigil in the future, is suspicious. Mordenkeinen's Tome of Foes as a preview of a Planescape setting book and/or AP would fit with Tales from the Yawning Portal and Xanathar's Guide to Everything previewing Waterdeep.

The Next Generation reference was to the episode "Cause and Effect," where "On the following loop, Crusher again has a feeling of déjà vu during the poker game, but when Data deals the next hand, all the cards are threes, followed by a hand where all players have three of a kind. The number 3 begins appearing throughout other parts of the ship's operations while, again, they determine they are stuck in a time loop. When they reach the anomaly and the ship appears from it, Data suddenly realizes that the 3 stands for..." I wouldn't read too much into that, other than Perkins saying the Rule of Three (concept and character) might be featured in future books.

These bits almost always tie into future products, actually. One way or another, and it might be a long burn with Perkins.

And if they do do a Planescape-themed AP, they've mentioned the Great Modron March in numerous books so far, both in rulebooks and adventures. It would be a pretty good way of introducing the Outer Planes, moving along with the modrons around the Great Wheel, and each location would likely be designed to be modular, able to be lifted with little tinkering to be used as an adventure location in a homebrew campaign (need a fortress on Avernus or the Plain of Infinite Portals (or anywhere in the Hells or the Abyss really)? Just lift it from this book!)...

Perkins has been laying a lot of groundwork about Modrons for a couple years: sure he plans to pull that trigger in some way, at some point.
