The most common answers to the question “What do you think of Daos?” by people who’ve dealt with him are a cautious “interesting,” an appreciative “frellin’ crazy,” or a fearful “criminally insane.” All of the answers could be considered correct.
Daos certainly cuts a striking figure- tall and whip-thin, with black hair shaved close in a military cut, and eyes with pupils just a little too dilated. He has cultivated a distinctive style (working on the theory that having his reputation precede him saves him a lot of trouble), almost always wearing a long black duster with military-style clothing beneath.
Daos hails from a tiny, frigid dust ball that would be of no interest if not for its nominally useful location as a refueling point. Daos’ family has lived on Taneb VI since the early days of its colonization, and share the physical attributes of its longtime residents. The planet is small and far from the sun, meaning it has low gravity, cold weather and dim lighting. Thus, Tanebridgians hover on the biologist-maddening line between human and near-human, with physiological changes including lighter bones, taller average height, and better vision in poor lighting.
In addition to promoting certain physical traits, living on Taneb also causes certain psychological ones. Morals tended to slip away into the dark, dull night of perpetual winter; being lazy and cynical meant you never had to go outside. Daos was well done the path of becoming a typical Tanebridgians when, as a young teenager, he overheard a pair of Imperial officers en route to home while on leave bragging of their exploits. A short conversation ensued, and six months later Daos had started a local chapter of the COMPNOR Youth, and was the happy head of a group of budding fascists. Daos appreciated the “warrior culture” the Empire promoted, the chance to train himself physically, and (to be perfectly honest) the chance to beat people up. Daos lived for the COMPNOR sparring sessions, in which he regularly tromped his fellows.
Imperial Service allowed Daos to get far, far away from Taneb, while continuing to enjoy all the things he liked in the COMPNOR Youth program. As quickly as possible, Daos joined the Imperial Security Bureau. An organization that relied on intimidation and fear to achieve its goals, the role of jack-booted ISB thug fit Daos like a glove. He worked for some time as a minor agent and legbreaker in the Rim, and although he did quite well he never advanced very far, possibly because of his not entirely human credentials. Whatever the reason, Daos became disillusioned with the Empire- they seemed to promote mindless obedience, nepotism, political infighting and corruption rather than the pride and warrior culture that he had felt as a member of COMPNOR.
He handed in his resignation and turned his talents to the private sector. Since those talents involved a forked tongue and a ruthless propensity for violence, he quickly found himself a member of the criminal element. He has since earned a reputation for quick, brutal violence; a reputation that often negates the need for quick, brutal violence, since people will give up before anything starts. (ooc: +12 intimidate with reputation bonus. Yum.)
