DaemonEye has just released both the Dead Stars Rule Book, and a novel set in the same universe named Manticore's Run.
The Dead Stars Rule Book is a free alternate 3.5 SRD game set in a science-fiction/horror setting. The system is remarkably adaptible, very realistic, and includes a host of technology rules that are both easy to use and widely variable. There is even enough setting information here to begin playing the game immediately. At the price of NOTHING, how can this not be worth the time to download? It even comes with the first chapter of the Manticore's Run novel at no additional charge! Sometime this summer or fall, the fully-detailed Dead Stars Campaign Setting will also be released.
Manticore's Run is a fast-paced and invovled novel set in the same universe. It follows the misadventures of the free trade ship Manticore and her disfunctional (as well as multi-racial) crew as they try to the perfectly mudane things everybody takes for granted. Things like paying bills, buying food, not being blown up by fusion bombs, getting swindled by alien races, surviving combat with crazed cultists, and not getting turned into a "live-fire exercise" by corrupt politicians. All this for US $4, with the potential for more from the author Matthew Barron if our sales goal is met.
