Magic of Faerun p.173: Mastering a Foriegn Spellbook is the rule section you're looking for.
I don't think our poor unfortunate subterrainian Wizard friend has the (10 + # of spells in book + '# of highest lvl spell in book') days to be trying to 'Master' those other books.
Now, if one of those spells he could get was something that'd let the party escape its current prediciment (ie: being stuck underground) then they might hole-up somewhere long enough to allow him to try. Not that the DM wouldn't do his best to keep the entertained while they wait.
