Spontaneous casters using higher level slots to cast lower level spells

Simple q: Can spontaneous casters cast a lower level known spell using a higher level slot? Can't find a definitive answer in the books, everything I found talks about casters that prepare their spells.

The same statements should be in the Players Handbook in the Magic chapter.

Ok makes sense, but whats the point of MetaMagic highten spell? :confused:

The thingie for spontaneous casters is IIRC in the sorcerers description. At least in 3.0 it was possible for a sorcerer, but not for a bard.

Why are bards barred from doing so? I don't remember anything in the bard description that says they cannot. Indeed, I believe the bard description references the sorcerer description...

It's important to note that a lower-level spell placed in a higher-level slot does not have a higher save DC. It still uses the lower-level save DC (of the slot it should have gone in,) unless you use Heighten Spell on it. Spunkie already mentioned this, but Newbie's response makes me think it might still be unclear.

Example: If a sorcerer casts Sleep using a 9th-level slot, the save DC is still 11+cha bonus, because the spell is still only a 1st-level spell, even if you use a 9th-level slot. If the sorcerer Heightens the Sleep to 9th-level, then the save DC becomes 19+cha bonus, and, as Spunky said, penetrates a Globe of Invulnerability because it is now a 9th-level spell in a 9th-level slot.

Sorry if this was unnecessary, but it seemed like it might be. :)

I am not 100% sure (3.0 seems so far away), but the sorcerer spellcasting description mentioned explicitely that he could use a higher level slot on low level spells while the bards didn't say that... If I am right.

Spells: A sorcerer casts arcane spells. The number of spells a sorcerer knows is not affected by his Charisma bonus. The spells a sorcerer knows can be common spells chosen from the sorcerer and wizard spell list, or they can be unusual spells that the sorcerer has gained some understanding of by study.
A sorcerer is limited to casting a certain number of spells of each level per day, but he need not prepare his spells in advance. The number of spells he can cast per day is improved by his bonus spells, if any.
A sorcerer may use a higher-level slot to cast a lower-level spell if he so chooses. The spell is still treated as its actual level, not the level of the slot used to cast it.
To learn or cast a spell, a sorcerer must have a Charisma score of at least 10 + the spell's level. The Difficulty Class for saving throws against sorcerer spells is 10 + the spell's level + the sorcerer's Charisma modifier.

Bard 3.0 SRD:
Spells: A bard casts arcane spells. The bard casts these spells without needing to memorize them beforehand or keep a spellbook. Bards receive bonus spells for high Charisma, and to cast a spell a bard must have a Charisma score at least equal to 10 + the level of the spell. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a bard's spell is 10 + the spell's level + the bard's Charisma modifier.

All reference to casting lower level spells with a higher level slot is removed from the class descriptions in 3.5 SRD. However I agree with Silveras. The entry specifically refers to "various character class tables" and refers to Any spellcaster.

Magic Overview 3.5 SRD:
"Spell Slots: The various character class tables show how many spells of each level a character can cast per day. These openings for daily spells are called spell slots. Bard 3.5 SRD:
"Spells: A bard casts arcane spells, which are drawn from the bard spell list. He can cast any spell he knows without preparing it ahead of time. Every bard spell has a verbal component (singing, reciting, or music). To learn or cast a spell, a bard must have a Charisma score equal to at least 10 + the spell. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a bard’s spell is 10 + the spell level + the bard’s Charisma modifier.
Like other spellcasters, a bard can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. His base daily spell allotment is given on Table: The Bard. In addition, he receives bonus spells per day if he has a high Charisma score. When Table: Bard Spells Known indicates that the bard gets 0 spells per day of a given spell level, he gains only the bonus spells he would be entitled to based on his Charisma score for that spell level.
The bard’s selection of spells is extremely limited. A bard begins play knowing four 0-level spells of your choice. At most new bard levels, he gains one or more new spells, as indicated on Table: Bard Spells Known. (Unlike spells per day, the number of spells a bard knows is not affected by his Charisma score; the numbers on Table: Bard Spells Known are fixed.)
Upon reaching 5th level, and at every third bard level after that (8th, 11th, and so on), a bard can choose to learn a new spell in place of one he already knows. Unlike a bard or sorcerer, a wizard may know any number of spells. She must choose and prepare her spells ahead of time by getting a good night’s sleep and spending 1 hour studying her spellbook. While studying, the wizard decides which spells to prepare."
