[OOC thread] Midnight at Milwood Morgue [D20 Modern: Dark*Matter]

MIDNIGHT AT MILWOOD MORGUE

A PBP adventure for Dark*Matter [D20 Modern]

The town of Milwood, England, is like any long-forgotten post-Industrial backwater: empty streets, ancient buildings, rusted cars, rotting asphalt. The people here stare blankly at strangers, their faces drawn and hollow. Easy to write off the despair of this town as symptomatic of Northern England’s crumbling economy. But is that the real reason?

I’m recruiting 3-4 players for Midnight at Milwood Morgue, a short adventure I designed for the Dark*Matter: Shades of Grey campaign setting for D20 Modern. Be warned, however, that my vision of Dark*Matter is weirder and higher-powered than the traditional setting. Think Delta Green + Resident Evil + Silent Hill. Details are as follows:

1. Posting frequency every 1-2 days.
2. Characters will be 1st level. By the end of the adventure they will be level 2-3 and will be recruited into the Hoffman Institute.
3. The only book you will need to play is the D20 Modern core rulebook (or the D20 Modern SRD, downloadable from Wizards of the Coast). Players do not need to be familiar with the Dark*Matter setting, but they SHOULD be familiar with D20 Modern.
4. Attributes: use standard 32 point buy (see page 15 of D20 Modern core book).
5. Advanced classes can be any from Chapter 6 of the D20 Modern core book, plus the Occultist and the Telepath (Wild Talent feat is an acceptable starting feat), plus the Advanced classes from Dark Matter: Shades of Grey. Nothing from Urban Arcana.
6. Characters will meet in a tavern in Milwood. That’s right—the characters will actually meet in a tavern. Think of it as a homage to the good old days of AD&D. :p They don’t have to be on vacation; any reason you can think of for them to be in England is acceptable. You’ll need to think of a reason for your character being in a crummy little town 80 km northwest of Manchester, England. (Just in case anyone’s wondering, Milwood is not a real town.)
7. Starting occupations can be any from the D20 Modern core book.
8. I will be using Wealth and Reputation bonuses as usual, but for starting possessions don’t bother with wealth checks; just equip your character with whatever you think they would reasonably have with them for a trip to England. No firearms or explosives or body armor, sorry. :p I reserve the right to veto any obvious abuses for starting equipment, though! Your characters, BTW, cannot be from England. They are visitors there.

Hopefully that’s enough to get the wheels turning. If you’d like to participate and you think this game would be a good fit for you (and vice-versa) reply to this thread with any questions you have, as well as your character concept. First 3-4 solid responses and we’ll go ahead with it!

1st level Ordinaries? Not Heroes? Ordinaries use different ability scores. Oh well, just nit picking.

Never played in D*M. Know nothing about it. Will try anything once.

Rough concept, to be tempered later when I can sit down with the book. All elements subject to change.

Adam Carsen, known to his friends as AC, is a photographer for National Geographic. His last assignment took him to London. After the assignment, he decided to take some time off, and travel the Isles.
Adam Carsen, Fast1, photojournalist(investigative).

We'll see.

Erps...sorry, meant "ordinary citizens", as in, not special-op combat types. :( Thanks for the spot! So yes, it should have read "1st level heroes." I'll edit the original now...

I'm up for this. Hm., Character concept. How about this: Backpacking graduate student on break after his exams. Travelling through Milwood on his way to Scotland to visit friends in Edinburgh. His field of study is philosophy/religion, with some extra-curricular interest in the occult.

Jim Hollenbach is a student at New World University in New York City. He has a Master's Degree in religious studies, with a special focus on ritual practices. He is currently taking a break before beginning studies for his doctorate next year. He is considering doing his dissertation on ancient druidic rituals, and so has a special interest in being in England right now. He has already visited Stonehenge, and hopes to spend some time in the libraries in Edinburgh dipping further into his studies on his visit.

He is 25, dresses in jeans and T-shirts mostly. Has a fairly low-priced backpack containing his clothes and a few books on religion and philosophy (plus a little volume on the occult that he reads for a change of pace). He has longish hair and a wispy beard. He smokes a pipe, though he knows it makes him look pretentious. Right now he's out of tobacco though, so when he's thinking he just sucks on it.

What think ye?

As I read about Jim, my face broke into a grin. I like! Feel free to whip up character stats--ask if you have any questions.

I've never played d20 Modern before, but I do have prior d20 + PBP experience. I guess I'll throw in this concept a try:

Joyce Minton is currently on sabbatical from her position at John Hopkins in Baltimore. It was almost a ago that she was still happily married and working at a prestigious institution as a heart specialist...that is, before the "weird" things started to happen. For some reason, it seemed like people could read her mind. It wasn't noticeable at first, but slowly it took a toll on those around her. Her friends didn't seem to call as much as time went on and her co-workers occasionally seemed a little colder around her. It was finally her divorce a few months ago that led Joyce to take a break and seek out guidance/help from an old professor/friend of hers currently living in England.

She's 30 years old, and is dressed rather conservatively, keeping an air of professionalism around her. She keeps her reddish brown hair shoulder length, her eyes with a look of weariness from behind a small pair of glasses.

[Joyce Minton, Dedicated Hero w/ Wild Talent (Missive), Doctor Occupation]

I'm in too, as long as there's still room! Rough character sketch...

Tom Matthiessen, Dedicated Hero 1, maybe aiming towards the Field Guide advanced class in the minigame. A cryptozoologist who was investigating reports of some BBCs (British big cats) near Milwood. The reports panned out as red herrings, but Matthiessen decided to stay around the English countryside for a few days before returning to the States.

I'll work more on stats and further background.

Ditto to what Festy_Dog said. Looks like the game's full, but I like the sound of it. Should any more room come available, count me in :)
