I had a wizard character in a 2e game who was enormously strong, but whose intelligence barely qualified him to be a magic user - like an 11 or 12, I think. The idea behind him was that his father, grandfather, etc. had all been common fighters, and his father wanted something better for his son. So, he sent good ol' Ganth off to train as a wizard despite his intellectual mediocrity. Fun character. He fought with a trident - well, actually a pitchfork, because he had grown up on a farm.
