Rowyn, having nothing else to do, readies her crossbow to fire at the next target and begins to inspire courage. [Sorry for the delay. :(]

The heroes at the portcullis try again. [Strength check 12+6+2+2+2=24] The portcullis lifts a few inches but then drops again. "Almost there," Zanock says. "Just a little harder and we'll get it moving, and it should go straight up!"

A half-orc peers around the corner with his bow. Manzanita and Rowyn fire their readied missiles. Rowyn's bolt flies true, hitting the half-orc solidly in the shoulder [3 damage].

The half-orc releases his arrow, which strikes Zanock [4 damage. Zanock is trying to lift the portcullis, and gets no dex bonus, though he's not helpless].

You hear a voice, in Orcish, yelling "Wake up!"

One half-orc remains sleeping on the floor.

Manzanita whispers to the gnome, "Rowyn, we will may not get another chance. On the count of three, release you bolt at the sleeping orc. Otherwise, the others will wake him. One, two, three!" Manzanita will take careful aim and shoot the sleeping orc. (+4(1d8))

Under attack, the heroes once again fail to lift the portcullis. [Strength check 10+6+2+2+2=22]

Manzanita's and Rowyn's missiles hit the sleeping half-orc, sinking deeply into its torso. Surely nothing could survive that.

Meanwhile another half-orc archer joins the first. Two arrows fly towards Zanock, but miss.

Zanock, realizing he's the target of the arrows, growls ferociously, barking out to his companions "Come on, one more time!" The three look very uncertain, exposed and immobile as they are, but they nod and ready themselves to lift again.

Zanock and the others give a great heave, but fail to lift the portcullis again.

The two half-orcs shoot from around the corners, both aiming at Zanock, but both missing.

Manzanita sends an arrow towards the wounded half-orc archer, and hits him. The half-orc falls.

Rowyn reloads her light crossbow and fires at the other half-orc, hitting him.

Filbert's bolt follows, also hitting, and the half-orc falls.

You hear a voice calling out in Common "We surrender!"

Then another voice, "No you fool, they can't get by the portcullis! Follow me!"

Zanock and the others, seeing the half-orcs fall and no one come out to shoot, try to lift again, but fail.

A half-orc dashes across the corridor, before anyone can make any readied attacks. You hear footsteps receding.

Manzanita readies her bow in case any more try to run past. "You are brave and strong comrades. I don't think they will shoot at you any more. There is nothing to do but rest and try again."

The warriors settle in and continue lifting the portcullis. Meanwhile the sounds of the half-orcs' footfalls continue to recede. Then you hear noises, as of large things moving, some screams, and the sound of hooves in the distance.

Opening the portcullis, and keeping it open prove to be difficult [DC 25 Strength check required to open, and DC 23 required to hold it up once open]. But the party decides to rush through, letting the portcullis crash down behind them.

Moving relatively quickly, the party moves through the rest of the dungeon, in close pursuit.

Beyond the portcullis is a pressure plate on the floor that seems to do nothing.

Beyond the hallway with the portcullis is a roughly-carved chamber full of crates.

The chamber opens up into another chamber, appearing to be a natural cavern that has been widened in places. Wooden fences close off an area. Chained to a wall are two humans and a halfling, dead, covered in fresh blood. There are also large canvases covering bulky objects. On the far wall is a large opening to the outside. Next to the opening is a large structure of wood and canvas, the opposite side of which is painted and finished to look like natural stone and brush. It slides across the cave opening to conceal it. Outside the cave opening you see the snake pit.

Beyond the snake pit, outside, is a wooden structure you realize is a portable bridge that the half-orcs must have used to traverse the snake pit, and then pulled away once they got to the other side.

The pit is 20 ft wide. In the distance Alyssa and Filbert can see dust a few hundred yards away... the half-orcs retreating on horseback.

--

Deciding the pit is too wide to jump in a rush, and not having horses with which to pursue, the party takes a few minutes exploring the cave system.

The humans and halfling are wearing tattered rags, and appear to have been slaves, freshly killed. The area closed off by wooden fences have all the signs of having stabled horses kept there. The canvases cover several wagons, ballistae and catapults, and rack of weapons and armor, of the sort used by light foot soldiers and light skirmishers. There are also several burlap sacks filled with miscellaneous objects, perhaps captured loot.

The crates in the next cavern are filled with more weapons, armor, and provisions.

The pressure plate in the hallway triggers the portcullis.

The 5 ft corridor that the half-orcs came out of (the corridor leading to the leader's office), contains a secret door which leads to a short corridor with the winch to raise and lower the portcullis. The winch has been sabotaged so that it will no longer lift the portcullis.

"Fascinating. They certainly were well funded and supplied. If we can get out of here, we could load up the most valuable of the items into the wagons and take them back to Caradon with us. As for the rest of this place, I suggest we destroy it. We won't be able to use it as a base - it is to dangerous. The Hextorites will probably return. At least we have dealt them a major blow."

Manzanita takes some time to look through the crates and provisions. Is there any oil? Or poison?

"If we can't kill the snakes, we'll have to try to raise that portcullis again. Once we raise it, we can brace it w/crates and weapons. Then we can go around, push back the bridge, and take the wagons out."
