2nd Level, for two reasons.

1) Multiclassing makes more sense, if you can start out with both classes.
2) Double hit points, 1st level chars are whimps. :D

And 2nd level is still very much the same as 1st level, it doesn't take away from character development at all.

Yep- same here. I've done it this way since 1e (and before 1e) and don't see it changing any time in the future.

1st, historically. I would not be averse to starting at 2nd or 3rd if my players really wanted to, though.

It varies a lot with the campaign.

I'd say the general default is 3rd - extra feat, some flexibility/toughness and our group got *really* sick of levels 1 and 2 - Had a run of DMs who'd start a game, run about 10 sessions, then stop...

Although my current campaign started at 1st. Just for nostalgia.

Generally, from 3rd to 5th. This allows for characters with complex multiclasses, characters with a LA, and for complex backgrounds which imply a certain amount of experience.
